Insider Tips

The altitude of Ganden Monastery(4300m) is higher than Lhasa so you can take some high-calorie snacks and drinks just in case of the altitude sickness; walk slowly and steadily for the trek.

Due to the long zigzag road up to Ganden, you may consider bringing the motion-sickness medicine. While aboard the tour vehicle, focus on the window view instead of using your cellphone for a long time. It really helps.

If you come during the festival like the Shoton Festival, the thangka unfolding ceremony can also be seen in Ganden Monastery.

Day 4: Lhasa Tour: Explore Drak Yerpa Hermitage and Norbulingka

Highlights

  • Hike the enchanting Drak Yerpa valley around Yerpa Monastery;
  • Explore and mediate in the caves of Yerpa Monastery;
  • Get dressed in traditional Tibetan clothes and enjoy the stroll in lively Norbulingka;

Enjoy the scenic ride, 32km from downtown Lhasa; we will arrive at renowned Drak Yerpa hermitage, one of the best off-the-beaten paths for Buddhist exploration. After a brief lunch, you will head back to downtown Lhasa. You may rent Tibetan clothes and take nice photos while enjoying a leisurely walk in lovely gardens of Norbulingka, used to be the summer palace of generations of Dalai Lamas.

Insider Tips

Visiting Drak Yerpa (4885m) involves a steep hike. Take your time and move slow and steady. Feel free to have a rest many times during the ascent. Also highly advisable to bring your bottled mineral water and snacks to stay hydrated and energetic.

Also, sun protection gears like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat are a must. Besides, do wear a pair of comfy sport shoes or trekking boots for an easy walk. Dressed in layers because during the noon, the blazing sunshine can be hot while inside the meditation cave, it’s much colder.
