Overview

What Makes this Tibet Trip Different?

Garong

Yunnan-Tibet Highway is a world-class off-road route, especially splendid in spring and autumn. It is also the Tibetan ancient tea trade route. The merchant caravan has created Tibetan tea-horse culture by trading tea for horse or horse for tea for 500 years.

Join us on this unforgettable 12-day Yunnan to Tibet overland tour, where you will travel from the charming old town of Lijiang, through the legendary land of Shangri-La, and across the stunning “Swiss-style” landscapes of eastern Tibet, all the way to Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet. This scenic route follows part of the ancient Tea-Horse Road and covers around 1,930 kilometers of pure adventure.

Along the way, you’ll marvel at the sacred Meili Snow Mountain in Deqin, unwind in the natural hot springs of Yanjing, and drive through some of the wildest, most beautiful valleys in Nyingchi of eastern Tibet. From the turquoise waters of Ranwu Lake to the glacier-covered peaks of Midui and quiet Tibetan villages nestled in forested valleys, each day brings new surprises and jaw-dropping scenery.

The journey culminates in Lhasa, where you’ll explore Tibet’s most iconic landmarks like the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and witness the fascinating monk debates at Sera Monastery. With our local Tibetan guides by your side, you’ll not only enjoy the dramatic landscapes but also connect deeply with Tibetan culture and people. Join us for an epic overland adventure of a lifetime!

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Start the trip from Lijiang to Shangri La

Set off from Lijiang, and drive about 60KM to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in the Stone Drum town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road runs through the Lijiang valley, which is filled with wheat fields and dry haystacks.

Continue driving 40KM more to visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha in this area because you can find gold in the river.

In the afternoon, head for Shangri La, the former Zhongdian. Upon arrival in Shangri La, you will enter the Tibetan cultural area and a landscape of barley fields and yaks scatter in the valleys.
