You'll join the morning pilgrimage circuit along the Barkhor Street, walking alongside local Tibetans as they spin prayer wheels and circle the sacred Jokhang Temple. In the soft light of early morning, you'll experience the quiet yet powerful rhythm of living Tibetan faith.
Mindful Observation
Gently notice how spiritual practice flows naturally through everyday life in Tibet. Observe the different rhythms of the pilgrims -elderly locals, working adults, and devoted practitioners performing full-body prostrations. Their pace may differ, yet they all move with the same sense of purpose.
Personal Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on your own life.
In your city, what are people rushing toward each day?
What shapes the rhythm of your own daily pace?
Insights
- Experience how mindfulness and devotion are woven into daily life in Tibet.
- Sense the contrast between the rhythm of Tibetan spiritual life and the pace of modern cities.
- Begin reflecting on the deeper purpose behind your own busy work and life rhythm.
Session 2: A Taste of Life at a Traditional Local Teahouse
09:30 - 11:30 | Guangming Sweet Tea House
You will step into the lively atmosphere of the Guangming Sweet Tea House, one of Lhasa’s most beloved local gathering places. As enjoying a cup of traditional Tibetan sweet tea, you will listen to everyday conversations among locals about work, family, and daily life, with translation provided by your local guide.
In the warmth of this simple teahouse, you may begin to sense how ordinary moments hold both the struggles and quiet joys of life.
Mindful Observation
As you sit among the locals, gently notice the flow of conversations around you. Pay attention to what people talk about, what brings them happiness, and what causes worry or disagreement.
Through these simple exchanges, you may glimpse the everyday concerns, hopes, and attachments that shape people’s lives.
Personal Reflection
As you listen, take a moment to reflect on your own life.
What brings you joy?
What worries or frustrations arise in your daily routines?
How do happiness and difficulty appear in your own experiences?
Insights
- You may begin to recognize that both joy and struggle are natural parts of human life.
- You may notice how people everywhere share similar hopes, concerns, and attachments.
- This awareness can help you see that happiness and difficulty often arise together, offering opportunities for deeper understanding and compassion.
Session 3: Walking Meditation at Sera Monastery
12:30 - 15:00 | Sera Monastery
In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery and begin a quiet walking meditation along its kora path. Moving slowly around the ancient monastery, you will experience the peaceful rhythm of this sacred space, where pilgrims, prayer wheels, and mountain streams accompany the path.
During the walk, your guide will gently introduce the spiritual background of the monastery and accompany you throughout the meditation experience.
Later, you will spend time sitting quietly near the meditation cave associated with Je Tsongkhapa, the great Tibetan Buddhist master. In this peaceful setting, take time to contemplate questions about causes and conditions in your own life.
Mindful Observation
As you walk in silence, bring your attention to the surroundings. Notice the flowing water beside the path, the small shrines and prayer halls along the kora route, the water-powered prayer wheels turning steadily, and the offerings placed before the Buddha statues.
Allow yourself to walk slowly and remain present with each step.
Personal Reflection
While sitting quietly near the meditation cave, take time to contemplate causes and conditions in your own life. You may choose one or two questions for deeper reflection:
- Why am I here at this moment in my life?
- What experiences and choices have shaped the person I am today?
Simply allow these questions to arise without forcing answers.
After the meditation, you may share and explore your reflections with your guide if you wish.
Insights
- Begin exploring the Buddhist idea that our present life grows from many past causes and conditions.
- Recognize how past experiences, choices, and circumstances shape who we are today.
- Through quiet reflection, develop a deeper awareness of the connections between your past, present, and future.
Session 4: Finding Focus at the Sera Monastic Debate Courtyard
15:30 – 16:30 | Sera Monastery Debate Courtyard
In the afternoon, you will visit the famous debate courtyard of Sera Monastery, where monks gather to practice traditional Buddhist philosophical debate.
Your guide will introduce the meaning and cultural background of the monks debates at Sera Monastery. As the debates unfold around you, you will quietly sit in a corner of the courtyard and begin a short meditation exercise inspired by the lively atmosphere.
With your eyes gently closed, notice the many sounds of the courtyard, such as voices, clapping hands, and lively conversations, as they naturally come to you.
Mindful Observation
Within the vibrant energy of the debate courtyard, bring your attention to the sounds around you. Among the many voices and rhythmic claps, gently choose one monk’s voice to follow.
Notice how your mind responds to the surrounding noise. Gradually allow your awareness to settle on that single voice, letting the other sounds fade into the background.
Observe how focus begins to emerge even within a lively and dynamic environment.
Personal Reflection
As you continue listening, imagine that each sharp clap used in the debate symbolizes the breaking of confusion or distraction.
Allow these sounds to remind you to release scattered thoughts and return your attention to a single point of awareness.
Insights
- Experience how concentration can arise even within a busy and energetic environment.
- Discover how focused attention can gradually quiet the scattered activity of the mind.
- Gain a glimpse of the Buddhist meditation practice of deep concentration - a state of clarity and stability of mind.
Session 5: Sunset Contemplation Above Lhasa
17:30 - 18:30 | Sera Utsé Hermitage, Sera Monastery
In the late afternoon, you will drive from Sera Monastery up the mountain to Sera Utsé Hermitage, a quiet temple overlooking the city of Lhasa.
Near the hermitage, you will sit quietly on a large rock, surrounded by mountains and open sky. As the sun slowly sets over the Lhasa Valley, take time to simply rest in the stillness of the landscape and enjoy the vast view stretching across the city and the surrounding mountains.
Mindful Observation
As the daylight softens, notice the changing colors of the sky and the gradual quiet that settles over the valley. Feel the spaciousness of the mountains and the gentle transition from day to evening.
Allow your awareness to open to the vast landscape around you, without trying to control or analyze the experience.
Personal Reflection
From this higher vantage point above the city, observe how your perspective naturally shifts.
- When you step away from the movement and noise of daily life, how does your view of the world change?
- What feels different when you look at life from a place of distance and quiet?
Insights
- Experience how a change in physical perspective can bring a shift in inner awareness.
- Discover the calm that arises when you step back from the busyness of everyday life.
- Begin to sense how spaciousness and stillness can create room for deeper clarity.
Day 2: Nature and Compassion Retreat- Harmonizing with Life
Session 6: Practicing Compassion by the Yarlung Tsangpo River
08:00 - 11:00 | Yarlung Tsangpo River
In the morning, you will rescue fish from a local market and release them into the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the great river that flows across Tibet.
By the riverside, you will take part in a traditional act inspired by Buddhist compassion - returning the fish to the river and allowing them to swim freely again in their natural environment. Feel the cold water and the life in your hands, allowing yourself to fully experience this simple yet meaningful moment.
Mindful Observation
Notice the sensation of the cool river water on your hands and the natural movement of the flowing river.
As you hold the fish gently, observe its movement and the instinctive energy of life. When the fish reenters the river, watch how quickly it disappears into the water and returns to its natural freedom.
Allow yourself to stay present with the rhythm of the river and the living world around you.
Personal Reflection
As you witness this moment of release, reflect on the connection between all living beings.
- What does compassion mean in your own life?
- How does it feel to participate in an act that protects or supports another form of life?
Sometimes, caring for another life can also open a quiet space of kindness within ourselves.
Insights
- Experience the Buddhist value of compassion for all living beings.
- Recognize the deep connection that exists between human life and the natural world.
- Discover how simple acts of care and kindness can bring a sense of inner warmth and awareness.
Session 7: Practicing Generosity at the Chimpu Hermitage
12:00 – 17:00 | Chimpu Hermitage
In the afternoon, you will travel to Chimpu Hermitage near Samye Monastery. It is a sacred retreat site where practitioners have meditated for centuries.
Before heading into the mountains, you will visit a local market to purchase simple offerings such as bread and fruit. These items will be carried with you as you hike along the mountain paths leading to the hermit caves.
As you walk through the quiet landscape, you may meet retreat practitioners who live and meditate in the caves. With the help of your guide as translator, you may greet them, offer small gifts of food or daily necessities, and share a brief moment of human connection.
Mindful Observation
As you walk along the mountain paths, notice the quiet simplicity of the hermit environment.
Observe the humble conditions in which many practitioners live - small caves, minimal belongings, and a life devoted to meditation.
Pay attention to how a simple offering of food or supplies can create a moment of warmth and connection between people who come from very different worlds.
Personal Reflection
Consider the experience of giving without expecting anything in return.
- How does it feel to offer something simple to another person?
- What emotions arise when generosity is shared and received?
Sometimes the act of giving creates a quiet sense of joy not only for the receiver, but also for the giver.
Insights
- Experience the Buddhist value of generosity and offering.
- Discover how simple acts of giving can create genuine human connections.
- Sense how generosity can bring a quiet happiness that arises from sharing with others.
Session 8: Resting in Nature at Chimpu Hermitage
17:00 - 17:30 | Chimpu Hermitage
At the end of the journey, you will find a quiet and open place near the hermitage overlooking the vast valley of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.
Here, you will sit comfortably facing the mountains and the flowing river below. Allow yourself to close your eyes, relax your body, and simply rest in the presence of the natural world.
After two days of mindful experiences, this moment offers a space to slow down, breathe deeply, and gently integrate everything you have encountered along the journey.
Mindful Observation
Notice the sounds of nature around you - the wind moving across the mountains, distant water flowing through the valley, and the quiet rhythm of the landscape.
Feel the temperature of the air, the warmth or coolness on your skin, and the steady presence of the earth beneath you.
Allow yourself to simply listen and be present.
Personal Reflection
As you sit quietly, take a moment to sense how your mind and body feel after these two days of reflection and meditation.
- What has shifted within you?
- What insights or feelings remain with you as this journey comes to an end?
Sometimes clarity arises not through effort, but through stillness.
Insights
- Experience the deep calm that can arise from simply resting in nature.
- Allow the reflections of the past two days to settle naturally within you.
