September Reveals Tibet’s Tourist Destinations at Their Very Best

September in Tibet is a month that shows the region at its best. On a Lhasa tour, the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and pilgrims walking along Barkhor Street are must-see sights. With red, white and yellow color, the Potala Palace is especially grand under September’s blue sky. You can photograph it from Potala Square or climb to the top for a clear view of the city.

North of Lhasa lies Namtso, one of Tibet’s holy lakes. It is also called the Heavenly Lake. Its blue waters reflect the snow-capped Niangqing Tanggula mountains. The golden grasslands during the autumn along the shore are full of nomadic life with yaks. Beside the natural scenery, the Holy Elephant Gate and the local pilgrims Kora around the lake also offers cultural touch.

About two hours’ drive from Lhasa is Yamdrok Lake. Its deep blue waters stretch across the land like a ribbon. The lake shines beautifully with the golden grasslands in September. As the closet holy lake near Lhasa, you can enjoy lunch with a local Tibetan family, while seeing the lake and snow-capped mountains through the window.

For travelers who love mountains, visiting Mt. Everest from Lhasa in September is a perfect option. The clear skies allows you to admire Everest and other Himalayan peaks. Additionally, our Everest Base Camp tours have four viewpoints, so you can see Everest from different sides, as well as the golden summit at sunrise and sunset, and the starry night sky above.

Further west are Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The autumn landscape here is crisp and golden. Blue waters, blue skies, snow-capped peaks, and colorful prayer flags create a breathtaking view. Watching pilgrims walk the Mt. Kailash Kora a and seeing animals preparing for winter shows both nature and culture.

What Special Cultural Activities Are Available in Tibet in September?

The Ongkor Festival, or “Bumper Harvest Festival,” is a traditional Tibetan celebration for a successful harvest. “Ongkor” in Tibetan means “circle the field.” It is held in farming regions during the 8th month of the Tibetan calendar. Since Tibet is huge, the timing and activities vary and generally it falls on the beginning of September.

The three-day festival begins with families preparing ritual items and Tibetan monks perform purification ceremonies. On the second day, family members go out and join a farmland parade. They sing and chant to honor the god. The final day is all about cultural performances, including Tibetan opera, Mask Dance, archery, and horse racing.

Another one is Tibetan Bathing festival, which marks the end of summer and the start of autumn. With a history of over 800 years, it is held annually and lasts for a week. Celebrated from July 6 to 12 in the Tibetan calendar (around August or September), Tibetans gather by riversides, bathing and washing cloths during this time brings health and good fortune.

During the festival, Tibetans participate in bathing, washing hair, and cleaning clothes with “holy water” from the river. The riverside becomes lively with families and friends enjoying, linka, Tibetan picnics, singing, dancing, and sharing snacks. The best spots to see the celebrations is along the Lhasa River. You can participate and experience traditional Tibetan culture firsthand.

Note: If you’re interested in these two festivals while traveling in Tibet and want to participate, we suggest contacting us in advance to plan your tour for the best experience, as the dates vary each year according to the Tibetan calendar.
