Saga Dawa, one of Tibet’s most sacred festivals, is celebrated in May or early June based on the Tibetan lunar calendar (This year’s Saga Dawa festival is celebrated on June 11 in 2025). It honors the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha Shakyamuni.
In Lhasa, pilgrims walk the Barkhor Kora, make donations, avoid harming animals, and release captured creatures - acts that make this month known as the “Month of Merits.” The festival reaches its peak at Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, where thousands of Tibetans complete the three-day Kora in a powerful display of devotion, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
