Guest Experiences: Highlights of Exploring Tibet in March 2026

Lhasa Highlights in March

Lhasa highlights in March are definitely about the local Tibetans. As the first month after the Tibetan New Year, Lhasa is filled with locals rather than tourists. Whether you visit the Potala Palace or explore Jokhang Temple, you’ll see plenty of Tibetans performing kora at the foot of the Potala Palace or around Jokhang Temple. In addition to these cultural highlights, the clear views of the Potala Palace from various angles make it an ideal time for photography.

The lake’s clear blue water, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, offered the perfect opportunity for peaceful walks and beautiful photos. And with a delicious Tibetan lunch at a local family’s house along the shore, this trip was not just a feast for the eyes but also for the stomach.

Practical Tips for Visiting Tibet During March

Visiting Tibet in March is a unique and rewarding experience, but it's essential to be prepared for the region's high-altitude environment and unpredictable weather. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your Tibet adventure in March:

1. Even though March is considered the start of spring, the weather can still be cold, especially in the early morning and late evenings and at higher altitudes. Pack warm clothing, including a good jacket, gloves, and a hat. Be sure to have clothing and dress in layers that can be adjusted for the fluctuating temperatures, cool during the day and chilly at night.

2. In addition to the famous Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival, the Tsongkhapa Butter Lamp Festival, which takes place on the 15th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar, sometimes falls at the beginning of March. If you wish to experience this unique Tibetan festival, be sure to contact us in advance to confirm the dates.

3. Due to the cold weather, attractions in remote northwest Tibet still experience harsh winter conditions. Mount Kailash tour and Lake Manasarovar yatra are unavailable until late April when temperature get warmer. Additionally, the road to Namtso Lake may be closed due to heavy snow in March, but we will keep you informed.
