What ls the Weather Like in Lhasa in August and What to Wear?

August is the height of summer in Lhasa and also the warmest month. The high altitude keeps the climate pleasant. Average daytime temperatures are around 22°C, while nights drop to about 10°C. The cool temperature makes Lhasa an ideal escape from the summer heat.

August is also the tail of Tibet’s rainy season. Lhasa enjoys around 27 clear days this month, with most showers falling in the late afternoon or at night, rarely lasting the whole day and has little impact on your Lhasa tour. The rain also bring the most humid, with the highest oxygen levels thanks to summer rain and lush greenery.

Another advantage of August is the long daylight hours. The sun typically rises around 6:40 a.m. and sets at about 8:40 p.m., giving you more time for exploration. Still, the temperature difference between day and night can be sharp, so if you plan an early morning kora or enjoy Lhasa’s nightlife, it’s wise to bring something warm.

Light wear is best for daytime. T-shirts are usually enough. However, a sweater and a waterproof jacket are also advisable. Jeans can feel heavy and hot in summer, so lighter trousers are more comfortable. Dressing in layers is the most practical way to adapt to temperature changes.

Since occasional showers are likely, an umbrella or raincoat can be handy. Though it is rainy season, the sunlight in Lhasa is strong. Bring sunscreen, a brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Lip balm and skin cream will also help with dryness caused by the high-altitude.

Highlights of Visiting Lhasa in August: Must-Sees and Special Activities

As the most iconic landmark of Lhasa, the Potala Palace undoubtedly ranks as the number one must-see site. Once the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas, the palace stands like a fortress, with its striking red and white Palace crowned by golden rooftops.

The Red Palace forms the spiritual heart of the complex. It is dedicated to religious purposes, with sacred stupas of eight Dalai Lamas, ornate Buddhist chapels and exquisite frescoes. By contrast, the White Palace once served as the living quarters and the administrative center.

The Potala Palace offers unforgettable views from different angles. From Potala Square, you can see its grandeur and watch pilgrims walking their kora and chanting mantras. As you climb higher, you see golden roofs shining in the sun, and wide views of the city below.

Another must-visit site is Jokhang Temple, regarded as the spiritual heart of Tibet. Housing the revered Jowo Shakyamuni Buddha statue, the temple has been the holiest pilgrimage destination for over 1,300 years and preserves sacred statues, murals, and precious artworks inside.

Two koras around Jokhang Temple are especially famous: the Barkhor Street kora and the inner kora on the temple’s second floor. Visiting in the morning is recommended, as local Tibetans usually begin their kora between 9:30 and 10:30. You can first join the Barkhor kora, then explore inside with a Tibetan guide, and finally walk the inner kora for a deeper spiritual experience.

Beyond Jokhang, Lhasa is home to other great monasteries. Sera Monastery is famous for its lively monk debates in Tibet. Drepung Monastery is the largest in Lhasa and hosts the grand Thangka display during the Shoton Festival in August. Ganden Monastery, offers a chance to combine spiritual exploration with short treks through stunning natural surroundings.
