The first day trekking takes only 4 hours and covers 11km. Given the arduous trekking with high elevation, it is advisable to hire yaks to carry the supply and a yak groom.

Day Two Trek from Leten to Bartso

“Following the soft tundra, we headed towards the Lasar La(5300m), the highest pass throughout the trek. The strenuous trek made our advance slow. Whereas the Yak groom and his loyal yaks moved swiftly as if they strolled on the ground.”

Move Closer to the Crest of the Mountain

“After we passed the snow line, all of a sudden we found that we entered a land of snow. Above our head are the densely fluffy clouds and deep blue sky. And the air was extremely thin and it was pretty challenging to one’s stamina. Here was the most different part of the entire trek.”

“The mighty Tibetan yak was indispensable for tough trekking and mountaineering in Tibet. Their red blood cells were three times more than normal cows so they could easily cope with long distance trekking or mountaineering without any problems on high elevation.”

“As we reached the lofty mountain pass, we saw a pile of Mani stones with a skeleton of yak head on it. In Tibet, on the mountain pass it was pretty common to see such scene, such as fluttering prayer flags, piles of Mani stones engraved with Buddhist scripture as a special offer to holy mountain gods as well as a blessing for peace and safety.”

“Put the heavy bags aside, we sat back for a good rest. You felt peaceful on the mountaintop.”

“Interestingly, the Yak’s herdsman told us that yaks only travel in pairs or groups, because if you forced a yak to move, he won’t go for the fear of being killed by instinct. Therefore, travelers needed to hire at least two yaks and a yak groom at one time.”

“The village was fairly small with around 5 or 6 houses. The entire place was dotted with plenty of Tibetan yaks and other livestock. What an idyllic scenery it was! Tibetan nomads normally were exceedingly hospitable and they loved to invite travelers to their tents for a coup of butter tea and eat yak meat.”

Day Three: Leave the Village and Kept Moving to Dorje Ling Nunnery

“Got ready for the day three’s trekking, Yak groom made sure that the supply was safely loaded on the yaks.”

“The crew followed a small trail leading across the valley and over another ridge, from where you will be rewarded with views of Nyenchen Tanghlha (7111 m), the holiest mountain in central Tibet. on the side of the trail is a pile of Yak dung, which was dried and used as the fuel for cooking and heating inside Nomad’s yak tent.”
