Best Month for Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour/Trek? September is Number One

With cool weather and the clearest views, September, marking the start of autumn, is the best time for the Kailash Kora and a visit to Lake Manasarovar. Daytime temperatures average around 10°C, and most days remain sunny, making the trek more comfortable than in any other season.

The travel conditions in September are also ideal. As the peak months of July and August passed, both rainfall and tourist numbers drop, while local Tibetan pilgrims increase. This gives you a more authentic atmosphere and offers more accommodation options for your Kailash tour.

In this review, we’ve included weather details for Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, crowd levels, the classic routes, and a practical packing list. With plenty of photos from our guests enjoying their Kailash tours in this September, we’re pretty sure yours will be just as memorable.

Tour Mount Kailash in September

September is the Best Month for a Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour with Perfect Weather

September is the start of golden autumn in Tibet. As the best time to visit Mt.Kailash, the weather at this time is cool, the air is crisp, the days are clear, and rainfall is minimal. Since Mount Kailash tour is unavailable in winter due to harsh weather, autumn is your best and last chance to tour the sacred mountain of the year.

Daytime temperatures in September at Mount Kailash region average around 10°C, with highs of about 18°C, while nights drop to 2-3°C. However, you can still feel the coldness at early morning or in the late afternoon so it’s best to wear layers so you can adjust your clothing as needed.

Rainfall in September is very low, with only about 24mm for the whole month. This gives the clearest views of Mount Kailash of the entire year, especially the stunning golden summit at sunrise and sunset, which can be seen almost every day from every angle.

There is still a chance of showers in September, but due to the high altitude, rain usually falls in the late afternoon or at night. This has little effect on daytime sightseeing or Tibet trekking tours. A light raincoat is enough to deal with the occasional shower.

September is the Best of the Best Month for a Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour with Fewer Crowds

September is widely regarded as the most rewarding time to visit Mount Kailash. Both the weather and travel conditions are ideal, and the region enters a quieter phase, ready to reveal its most stunning landscapes to those who come in this season.

One of the biggest advantages of September is the drop in visitor numbers. Indian pilgrims, who usually arrive in large groups during summer, decrease significantly. Domestic tourists also decline after the summer vacation ends. With fewer travelers on the roads and trails, you can explore at your own pace without the pressure of crowds.

Accommodation is also much easier to arrange during this period. With reduced demand after the peak tourism season, more guesthouses and hotels are available. In September, you may find hotels in Darchen with clear views of Mount Kailash right from your window at a decent price.

Another highlight that makes September truly special is the growing presence of local Tibetans. Many Tibetans begin their kora around Mount Kailash during this time, walking with prayer wheels, hanging prayer flags at mountain passes, and measuring this sacred land with their bodies. Interacting with them adds an unforgettable spiritual dimension to your Kailash journey.

Most Classic Routes for Mt.Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour in September: Is It Difficult to Trek?

Trekking around Mount Kailash is physically demanding but not difficult. The second day is the toughest as you cross Dolma La Pass, at the elevation of 5,630 meters. With careful planning and support from our experienced Tibetan guides, porters and houseman, most guests complete this once-in-a-lifetime trek successfully with Tibet Vista.

The classic Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar tour begins in Lhasa. After three days of Lhasa tour, seeing the iconic landmarks like Potala Palace and Jokhang temple, the journey continues through Everest Base Camp before reaching finally Darchen, the starting point of the kora.

This route combines major cultural sites and stunning natural scenery, including Yamdrok Lake, Mount Everest base camp, and reach it peaks when the Kora is starting. The kora itself is about 52 km, averaging 5,000 m in elevation. Most international visitors take three days to finish Kora.

On Day 1, you will trek from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery. This 20 km, 6-hour hike is a moderate start with gentle ups and downs. You can begin early from Tarboche, the prayer-flag square, where porters or yaks are also available if needed.

On the second day of the kora, you’ll trek from Dirapuk to Dzultripuk Monastery. This stage is about 18 km and takes 7 to 8 hours. It is the hardest day, as you cross Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters, but it also rewards you with stunning views of Mount Kailash’s north face.

On the final day, you will trek from Dzultripuk Monastery back to Darchen. This is the easiest part of the kora, covering 14 km in 3 to 4 hours with a mild descent. With time to spare, you may also visit Lake Manasarovar to conclude the journey.

Note: You can also start your Mount Kailash tour from Kathmandu, or, if you are short on time, take a flight from Lhasa to Ngari Gunsa Airport as an alternative option.

At Tibet Vista, Our Mt. Kailash Tour Guides Are Highly Experienced: All Have Done the Kora More Than 70 Times

With 30 years of organizing Tibet tour experience, we deeply understands that a successful Kailash Kora depends largely on the guide you travel with. Given the high altitude and rugged terrain, a professional guide not only ensures your trekking experience but also your safety.

What’s more, the right guide knows not only the route but also the subtle details that make the journey manageable, from when to take a rest to what essentials to carry. These small decisions can make the difference between a smooth, fulfilling Kora and a difficult, exhausting trek.

To better serve our guest, all of our Tibetan tour guides are carefully selected experts who have completed the Kora at least 70 times, with many surpassing 100 treks. Guides such as Tenzin, Keldor, Pasang, Jigme, James, and Garong are just a few of our gold-standard team members.

Their extensive experience enables them to anticipate challenges, adjust the pace for different travelers, and provide personal care throughout the journey. They also carefully assess group members to determine who may need porters or horsemen to help carry luggage.

To maximize safety and comfort, each tour includes a dedicated local assistant team. One leads at the front, navigating the route, while another stays at the rear to support anyone who needs extra help. This system ensures that every traveler has assistance throughout the Kora.

With our team of veteran guides and attentive local assistants, every aspect of the journey is thoughtfully managed. We make sure every traveler has the best chance to complete the Kora.
