What is the Shoton Festival and When is it Held?
In Tibetan, the word “Sho” means yogurt and “Ton” means feast. For this reason, people often call it the “Yogurt Festival.” As one of the most significant Tibetan festivals, it is held at the end of the sixth month in the Tibetan calendar, which usually falls in July or August. In 2025, it will begin on August 23 and last a week.
The history of Shoton festival goes back to many centuries ago, around the 11th century, in Drepung Monastery, the largest monastery in Lhasa. During summer, insects become active, and monks avoided harming them by staying in retreat from the 15th of sixth month until the end of the month. During this period, they pray and practice meditation.
When the this is over, local villagers welcomed them with bowls of fresh yogurt. This tradition slowly grew into the Shoton Festival. Over the years, new customs were added, such as giant Thangka painting display and performing Tibetan opera.

How to Enjoy Shoton Festival: See the Giant Thangka Display at Drepung Monastery
During the Shoton Festival, the biggest highlight is the giant Buddha Thangka display at Drepung Monastery. The monastery has two huge thangkas of Shakyamuni Buddha, which are displayed in turn each year. Each thangka measures about 30 meters in both length and width.
On the first morning of the festival, monks carry the thangka up the hill to the platform behind the monastery. To witness the full ritual, do wake up early in the morning. As the sun rises, the silk thangka is slowly unrolled, revealing a magnificent image of Shakyamuni Buddha.
The painting covers about 900 square meters, creating a sight that is both grand and sacred. Thousands of pilgrims and visitors gather to watch, bow, pray, and throw white Hada scarves, the traditional Tibetan offering, toward the thangka to ask for blessings.
The Buddha Thangka exhibition is a religious ritual but also a major highlight of the Shoton Festival. If you are enjoying a Lhasa tour during this period, this is a sight you should not miss.
Note: Many locals and tourists head to Drepung Monastery, so it’s recommended to go early to get a good viewing spot. Also, due to heavy traffic, the final part of the road may be closed, and you may need to use public transportation to reach the monastery.
How to Enjoy Shoton Festival: Join Tibetans for a Picnic and Eating Yogurts at Norbulingka
After seeing the Thangka display at Drepung in the morning, head to Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama, for another highlight of the Shoton Festival. As Lhasa’s most popular park, it is a favorite spot for locals to enjoy Linka - Tibetan picnics - and lively performances with their families.
“Linka” means Tibetan picnic. The word comes from “Lin,” meaning green and lush area, and “Ka” referring to gardens. Together, it suggests a garden-like space where picnics take place.
During the Shoton Festival, Tibetans gather at Norbulingka with family and friends to share traditional food and drinks while enjoying the warmth of the sun. For both locals and tourists, yogurt is a must-have and a key symbol of this Tibetan festival tour.
Tibetan opera, called Lhamo, is another highlight. It combines singing, dancing, acting, and storytelling. At Norbulingka, performances are held outdoors in open courtyards. Actors wear bright costumes and masks, using bold gestures to retell famous legends and folk tales.
Beyond Norbulingka, the banks of the Lhasa River are also popular picnic spots. In summer, the area is covered in green grass, colorful wildflowers, and singing birds - creating a perfect setting for families to celebrate this unique Tibetan festival.

How to Enjoy Shoton Festival: Explore the Potala Palace and Watch Traditional Performances
Apart from Drepung Monastery and Norbulingka, the Potala Palace is another highlight to explore during the Shoton Festival. As the most famous landmark in Tibet, the palace comes alive with the festive atmosphere.
The visit begins at Potala Square, where Tibetan dances and songs fill the air with joy. At the foot of the palace, locals in traditional dress walk around with prayer wheels, circling the sacred site. Climbing up the steps, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the whole city.
Afterward, relax at Longwangtan Park, a peaceful retreat hidden just behind the palace. Here you can see the palace reflected in a calm lake surrounded by willows. During Shoton, the park is especially lively, with locals gathering for the traditional Guozhuang dance.
Finally, head to Barkhor Street market. Stop at a local teahouse to enjoy sweet Tibetan tea and taste dishes like momos, noodles, and yogurt. Sharing food and stories with local Tibetans makes the Shoton Festival experience even more special, and a cup of warm Tibetan sweet tea is the perfect way to relax after a day with early wake up.
