Preparation for the biking tour from Lhasa to Mount Everest

With an average altitude above 4,000 meters, biking in Tibet is an experience like no other. Also, the elevation changes can be quite dramatic and the largest elevation difference from Lhasa to Mt. Everest could reach 1,700 meters.

To acclimate effectively, it’s recommended to explore lower-altitude attractions upon arrival. For instance, spending your first days visiting Lhasa, exploring the famous Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and Sera Monastery allows your body to adjust while explore Tibetan rich cultural heritage.

A comfortable stay in a well-equipped hotel with oxygen supply is crucial. Due to the thin air on the high plateau, mild headache, nausea are common among travelers at the first few days. A good hotel with oxygen supply can help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness in Tibet.

Additionally, warming up by biking around Lhasa is a great way to find your pace before starting longer routes. There are several excellent options, such as cycling along the Lhasa River or to Drepung Monastery. A short test ride will help you adjust to biking at high altitude.

Highlights of the biking tour from Lhasa to Mt. Everest

As you biking west, Yamdrok Lake is the first highlight along the route. The biking distance from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake is about 190 km, typically taking two days. You'll cycle along the Tsangpo River, Khangbala Pass, and finally reach the Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three holy lakes.

Continuing west, you'll face two major climbs - the Karola Glacier and Smila Pass at 4,335 meters. As one of Tibet’s largest continental glaciers, Karola stretches from the mountaintop to just a few meters from the road, allowing you to admire its icy beauty without climbing.

While the journey offers breathtaking scenery, it also comes with challenges. The steep ups and downs due to altitude changes can be demanding. If this section feels too difficult, just speak with our Tibetan tour guides - they can give you a lift until the road become flat.

Most challenging section of biking tour from Lhasa to Mt.Everest

Before reaching the final destination, you must ride through one of the most challenging sections: the famous 108 bends. After entering the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, continue riding a few more kilometers, and you'll find the winding 108 bends right in front of you.

This dramatic mountain road extends for 50 kilometers and is the only route to the North Base Camp of Mount Everest from Shigatse, Tibet second largest city. It is often called the "Scenic Avenue to the Roof of the World" for its breathtaking views.

Along the way, you'll reach Gawula Pass. From this point, you can admire five of the world's highest peaks, all towering above 8,000 meters: Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. Gawula Pass is regarded as the most spectacular viewing platform along the entire cycling route from Lhasa to Mount Everest.

Interestingly, the Everest 108 Bends actually have more than 108 turns. Biking through this section is challenging, with an altitude difference around 800 meters and ups and downs. Thus, enough rest stops are essential for recovery and resting before continuing the journey.
