Everest Base Camp, the closest you can get to the mountain unless you are on an expedition to climb to the summit. While the base camp is still many miles from the summit of the world’s highest mountain, it gives the most spectacular views you could imagine, being so close to the world’s most famous mountain.

Almost everyone who comes to Tibet wants to visit Everest, and many of our tours take in the sights from EBC. The view of the mountain is stupendous, whatever time of the year, and thousands of people come here every year just to gaze on its magnificent peak. At 8,844.43 meters above sea level, not only is it the highest mountain in the world, it is the main peak of the mighty Himalayas. The mountain is shaped like a huge, natural pyramid, which is one of the sights that amazes people the most.

Tent Hotels near EBC

Finding somewhere to stay when visiting Everest Base Camp is never a problem. There is plenty of room to pitch your tent, and get out of the wind. Everest is situated on the border between Tibet and Nepal, with the famous North Face on the Tibetan side.

EBC dry season Clear view of the mountain during dry season at Everest

The best time to visit Everest Base camp is from April to June, or September to December. Although the latter part of the year is colder in the western areas of Tibet, it is ideal for traveling to EBC, since it is the dry season. The weather is clearer at these times of the year, and gives a better view of the mountain. July and August, the peak summer months for tourism in Tibet, are not a good time to visit Everest Base Camp. It is the rainy season in Tibet, and the mountains are often shrouded in mist and clouds.

If you are not one for “camping out” then you can always stay in a hotel. Although there are no bricks-and-mortar hotels close by, there are plenty of “tent hotels” run by locals during the peak tourist season. These spacious tents are the temporary homes of local families, who come to the mountain for six months of the year to rent out space to tourists. The tent hotels are spacious, windproof and very comfortable, considering their location. Inside each is a stove that burns yak dung for heating, and they all serve local food for their guests. Try the hot, sweet, milky, Tibetan Tea. It is delicious.

In the shadow of Mt. Everest, the base camp sits just four kilometers from the “tent city”, and it is a relatively easy walk. If you are not up to walking, there is a shuttle bus run by the tent city occupants for a small fee.

Quiet EBC Serenely quiet and peaceful at the base camp area

The view of Everest’s North Face is stunning, and well worth the time it takes to drive from Lhasa to see it. The base camp area is a quiet and peaceful place, with prayer flags flapping in the wind, and the view of snow blowing off the top of the mountain, like a smoking volcano. The serenity of the place is enough to make you feel at ease and at peace with the world.
