Five old Buddhist monasteries surround Lake Manasarovar in Ngari, and are major points on the Manasarovar Kora, traveled by thousands of pilgrims each year. The kora begins at the Chiu Monastery, on the northwest of the lakeshore, and heads clockwise around the lake, stopping for prayers and prostrations at each of the monasteries.

After the Chiu Monastery, you head next to the Langbona Monastery, Seralung Monastery, Yerngo Monastery, and Gossul Monastery, before returning to Chiu Monastery at the end of the kora.

Originally founded by the descendants of the Tubo Kingdom in central Tibet in the 10th century, the Guge Kingdom was an advanced civilization that lasted for 700 years, before completely disappearing from the plateau.
