To cross the Gyirong border to Kathmandu, two days are needed. On our classic 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu overland tour, after visiting Everest Base Camp, we’ll drive you straight to Gyirong Town for an overnight stay. Our friendly local Tibetan guide will help you get your border pass ready ahead of time for a smooth border crossing the next day.
The next morning, after breakfast, our local Tibetan guide and driver will take you on a smooth ride from Gyirong Town to Gyirong Port (25 km, 40 minutes). Here, you'll say goodbye to our guide and pass through Chinese customs with your passport and border pass checked, and cross the Rasuwa Bridge into Nepal at Rasuwa Gadhi.
On the other side of the Rasuwa Bridge, our friendly Nepali staff will be greeting you with warm smiles and helping you apply for your Nepali visa on arrival at the customs and immigration office.
Afterward, you can hop into our clean and comfy 5-seater SUV (Mahindra Scorpio) for a smooth ride (60 USD per person) to straight your hotel in Kathmandu. We typically accommodate no more than 5 guests per jeep to ensure maximum comfort.
The mountain road from Rasuwa Gadhi (on the Nepal side) to Kathmandu is extremely bumpy and winding, with unpaved dirt paths and steep bends running alongside steep cliffs. So, the 160 km drive to Kathmandu usually takes around 8 hours.
However, no worries! Our experienced local Nepali drivers know the route inside and out and can ensure you a safe and comfortable journey.
Besides, as you wind through Langtang National Park, you'll pass deep gorges, cascading waterfalls, and terraced rice paddies. The change in scenery is striking, with the landscape shifting from sparse alpine shrubs to lush green forests.

However, the downside is that while the local bus is cheaper, it often makes frequent stops to pick up and drop off passengers, turning what should be an 8-hour trip into 11+ hours.
On top of that, more travelers, and sometimes even livestock or heavy sacks of goods, may crowd into the already cramped bus or car, making the long and challenging journey riskier. Besides, no one can guarantee the safety of using carpooling or a private jeep for the trip from Rasuwa Gadhi to Kathmandu.

- Kathmandu to Gyirong Border Distance: The journey is about 160 km. While it might seem short, the winding mountain roads require us to go slow and steady, so we usually reach the border in about 6 to 9 hours. To cross the Gyirong border from Kathmandu, 2 days are required.
- Road Conditions from Kathmandu to Gyirong Border: As we leave the busy streets of Kathmandu behind, the road turns into a rugged, off-road journey through Langtang National Park. The path is narrow, muddy, and winding, with some rocky stretches that need a little extra patience. But, no worries! Our experienced Nepali drivers and sturdy 4WD vehicles are fully equipped to handle the terrain, ensuring you have a safe and comfortable ride every step of the way.
- Scenic View from Kathmandu to Gyirong: While the road may be bumpy, the views are absolutely breathtaking! As we leave Kathmandu Valley, you'll be surrounded by lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and deep river gorges, with the Trishuli River rushing below. You'll pass by terraced rice fields, where you can catch a glimpse of local Nepali life. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Ganesh Himal will appear through the clouds, guiding you toward the border.

From Kathmandu to Rasuwa Gadhi
In the morning, our Nepali staff will pick you up at your hotel in Kathmandu and offer you a smooth transfer to Rasuwa Gadhi (2,556m), the Nepal-China border.
The entire journey covers around 160km and takes 8 hours or so. You will travel from the bustling Kathmandu valley to the dramatic, rugged wilderness of the Himalayas.
The road starts off with some smooth, paved sections, but as you enter Langtang National Park, it soon turns into rugged, unpaved mountain paths. Along the way, you'll encounter narrow, winding trails, steep climbs, and plenty of twists and turns as you make your way to the border.
While the road is extremely bumpy, you can enjoy a beautiful change in the scenery. The lush rice paddies and tropical greenery give way to dense oak and pine forests as you gain altitude. You will also pass through remote, peaceful Nepali villages, where you can get a glimpse of the unique mountain life of the Sherpa communities.
The final drive to Rasuwa Gadhi is truly stunning, with towering grey cliffs on either side. As you approach the border crossing, you'll also spot the ancient ruins of Rasuwa Fort, standing quietly as a reminder of the past.
Insider Tips: As the Nepal immigration office closes early, around 4:00 PM, we'll arrange a comfortable local guesthouse for you to stay overnight. So, you can relax and cross the border to Gyirong Port in Tibet the next morning.

From Rasuwa Gadhi to Gyirong
The next day, after breakfast, we will drive you directly to the Nepal immigration point at the border crossings. After completing exit formalities, you will walk across the Resuo Bridge from Nepal to the Gyirong Port (1,800m) in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Meanwhile, you'll need to have your passport and printed Tibet Travel Permit ready for a quick check as you go through Chinese customs.
At the same time, our friendly local Tibetan guide and driver will be greeting you at the entrance of Gyirong Port in Tibet, offering a white, auspicious Khata, a ceremonial scarf, as a warm welcome.
Once all the fellow travelers arrive, our local guide and driver will take you to Gyirong Town (2,800m). Nestled among lush forests and breathtaking Himalayan peaks, Gyirong Town offers plenty of oxygen, making it the ideal spot to acclimate before heading to Tingri (4,300m) via Everest Base Camp (5,010m) the next day.
What’s more, in the afternoon, you’ll have the chance to join our local Tibetan guide for a scenic trek through the beautiful Gyirong Valley, a natural corridor where Buddhism was introduced to Tibet from India.
Along the way, you’ll pass the colorful Tibetan prayer flags draped suspension bridge, explore the sacred meditation cave of Buddhist Master Tsongkhapa (the lotus-born Buddha), and visit the 1,000-year-old Paba Monastery, a Nepali-style pagoda temple. It’s believed to have been built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo when his Nepali wife, Bhrikuti Devi, traveled through this route to Lhasa to marry him.

The scenic drive from EBC to the Gyirong border (specifically, Gyirong town) is about 350 km and takes around 6 hours.
Following the well-paved Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway, you will experience a rollercoaster ride from the awe-inspiring landscape of EBC (5,010m) to the forested and enchanting Gyirong Valley (2,800m), known as the backyard garden of Mt. Everest.
With a sheer drop of nearly 2,400 meters, traveling along the majestic Himalayas offers you a dramatic shift in scenery. You can admire the towering Mt. Shishapangma (8,027m), the only 8,000-meter peak entirely in Tibet, from the highway, and pause for a coffee while marvelling at the breathtaking view of the sapphire Pekutso Lake (4,590m) with the rolling Himalayan Range in the background.
After crossing the Ghungtang Lhamo Pass (5,236m), you'll arrive in oxygen-rich Gyirong in the late afternoon. In Tibetan, Gyirong means “A Valley of Happiness”, with lush forests, peaceful waterfalls, and deep canyons. It’s a beautiful natural gateway to Nepal.
