What does it Feel Like to Sleep at the Foot of Mt. Everest?

Latest Update: June,20 2023

For most travelers to Tibet, Lhasa and Everest Base Camp, the two most representative Tibetan scenic attractions are must-see during the trip. As a most popular and classic itinerary that covers many popular scenic spots, 8 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Small Group Tour also enables travelers to acclimatize the high altitude gradually.

Departing from Lhasa, you can visit the main tourist sites like Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung and Sera Monastery. Next, having passing through Gyantse, you will arrive at Shigatse in which locates the most majestic mountain in the world – Mt. Everest. It’s also the highlight of this tour. Here you can appreciate the Himalayas unfolding in succession in front of you just like the roof of the world. At night, you’ll have the chance to sleep at EBC tented camp. The night sky above your head will be a scene you will never forget in your life.

About EBC Tented Camp

EBC tented camp consists of two rows of tent "hotels" set up by local peoples, and each of them can house 8 – 12 guests. Actually, Everest Base Camp is 2 km further up the road, so there is still a way to go from the tented camp on the second morning.

Accommodation in tented camp is very basic, but generally, it’s simple and clean. There are no running water and facilities for bathing. The hotels do not have restrooms, neither. It is a single room with beds next to one another. In the middle of the house, there is a pot cast iron stove fueled with yak or sheep dung to keep warm. These are also the fuel for cooking. In every room, there will be a cook preparing meals for you: rice, noodles, soup, and sweet tea, simple and basic but taste good. And there are no gourmet restaurants available.

Every bed is equipped with blanket and pillows, and bedding is clean enough and very warm, but given the limited condition, if you don’t want to use pillows and duvets that might have been used by others, you can take a sleep bag or a sheet or pillow case by yourself.

As to the toilets, it’s outside the tented camp and charges 2 yuan for each person. Be prepared for the poor condition of it - sheds with holes in the floor – and it could be stinky. If you need to go to toilet at night, please prepare a flashlight since it is very dark outside. In brief, to share room with different tourists that you may even don’t know may not allow you much privacy, but you will definitely find it worthy at the moment of seeing the stunning view of Mt. Everest peak.

Tips for You

· Bring warm clothes and scarves or hats. Although the stove is on fire in the room, it could be mighty cold in the night. So don't get undressed when sleep - just add more layers on. A scarf will be helpful to prevent you from the bitter wind outside.

· If you are lucky enough in a sunny day, don’t miss the sunrise on the peak. The spectacular scene will be absolutely amazing.

· Bring a small thermos. You can generally get boiling hot water to warm you up. And you can also make tea, soup or noodles if the food on offer is unappetizing.
· Bring an adequate supply of small bills, ideally one yuan notes for toilet tolls.

Although you can’t enjoy comfortable living condition as it does in Nepal for lacking of amenities, it is also a part of adventurous tour to EBC that will leave you fresh experience. Twinkling night sky, spectacular sunrise, as well as the sublime mountain towering in front of you will impress you with an unforgettable picture in your mind for a lifetime.
