Golmud is the second largest and second most important city in Qinghai province. It’s part of the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture that covers the northwestern part of Qinghai. Most of Golmud is in the foothills of the Kunlun Mountains. It sits at an elevation of 2,809 meters, which contributes to its somewhat colder climate.
The city takes its name from the Golmud River, which runs alongside it. To the north are the salt flats of Qarhan Playa, which cover a huge area containing ten perennial salt lakes fed by the Golmud River. Xinjiang Province borders Haixi Prefecture to the northeast, Tibet is on the southwest border, and Xining is around 800 km to the east.

Running through the world's highest railway, all Tibet trains are equipped with an oxygen supply system onboard, which becomes operational after passing Golmud. So, you don’t need to worry about altitude sickness onboard the train to Tibet.
Along the 1,142 kilometers of railway from Golmud to Lhasa are some of the most scenic spots on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

At the border between Qinghai and Tibet is the Kunlum Mountain that stretches for a length of around 2,500 kilometers with an average altitude of 5,500 to 6,000 meters above sea level. While crossing the Tanggula Mountains, the train will pass through Tanggula Station, the highest railway station in the world at 5,068 meters above sea level.
Before crossing the Tanggula Mountain, you will pass through a vast area where the Hoh Xil Natural Reserve is located. It is the least populated area in the region and home to wildlife such as Tibetan antelope, wild yak, and wild donkeys. Also, there are high-speed trains from Xining to Golmud, which offer the fastest and the most convenient transfer experience. The modern C series bullet train is specially adapted to the climate and higher altitude. It makes the journey between Xining and Golmud in only 5.5 to 6 hours.

Get to Golmud by Air
There is one airport in Golmud, which operates limited direct flights from only four cities: Xining, Xi’an, Chengdu, and Zhengzhou. The shortest flight to Golmud is from Xining, taking just 1 hour and 20 minutes, while the longest is from Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, with a flight time of around 3 hours. Xining offers the most frequent direct flights to Golmud, with around 3 flights per day, and both Xi’an and Zhengzhou provide one daily flight to Golmud. The non-stop flight from Chengdu to Golmud is not daily, so you need to check the flight schedule in advance.

Qarhan Salt Lake
The word ‘qarhan’ is Mongolian for ‘saltmarsh’, which is a good description of this fascinating natural feature. Qarhan Salt Lake is the world’s second-largest and China’s largest salt lake. It measures over 160 km from east to west, spanning Golmud City and Dulan Country. The lake has solid and liquid salt giving rise to unique salt formations and colors. When is the best time to visit Golmud? May to October
Golmud has a cold and dry climate that is best visited from May to October, when the weather is most pleasant and the temperature is more comfortable.
In the summer months, the average temperature ranges from 4.3°C to 17.5°C, with wide temperature swings throughout the day. It is often very windy, with clear skies and strong sunshine. At high elevations, the mountain peaks are snowy year-round, but in the summer, the grasslands come alive with vibrant greens and blooming flowers.
Winter in Golmud is long and very cold. Temperatures below -30°c have been recorded. In those harsh conditions, areas can become impassable, especially in the mountains. The trains never stop running, but tourists are advised to visit during warmer seasons.
Do I need a permit to get to Golmud? Not at All
Unlike Tibet, no additional permits are needed to visit Golmud. Most international travelers need a Chinese tourist visa to enter the country, but after arriving, you can freely travel to Qinghai and Golmud with no additional paperwork. Explore the city and surrounding natural landscapes at your leisure.
To continue from Golmud to Tibet, a Tibet Travel Permit is required. All international travelers must present the Tibet Permit when boarding a plane or train to Tibet. Generally, it takes around 14 business days for the insurance of the Tibet Permit and it can only be applied through a local travel agency that offers Tibet tour services for you.
