The Qushui Bridge over Lhasa River in Tibet is a very important bridge. The 300-meter long bridge is located in Qushui County, about 60 km south of Lhasa and 27km west of Lhasa Gongar Airport. It's the main artery from Lhasa to Gongga Airport.
Qushui Bridge was open to the public on August 01, 1966. The bridge is 300 meters long and 10 meters wide. All the major roads in Tibet pass by or over Qushui Bridge.
The Qushui Bridge is also one of the most famous shooting places on the way from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp. Under the Blue sky, Qushui Bridge is just like a long dragon hung on the Lhasa River, connecting Lhasa city and Gonggar Airport.
Starting from Lhasa, driving cross Qushui Bridge and turning left, you will get to Lhasa Gonggar Airport 27km away from Qushui Bridge; turning right, you will get to Yamdroke Lake in 41km, Nanggartse County in 91km, Gyantse in 187km and Shigatse in 287km.
At the Qushui Bridge, the Lhasa River suddenly changed, the wide river, flat water. The Lhasa River, as an important tributary of Yalu Tsangpo River, meets Yalu Tsangpo River at Qushui County.
The interesting thing is that on the bridge there is a "water burial stage". Water burial is one of the typical Tibetan forms of burial. On the rocks along the river side you can see some white ladders for taking the souls to the heaven.
If you don’t crosses the Qushui Bridge and drive west at the north of Qushui Bridge when you travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu, you will easily get to Shigatse in 187km along the National Highway No.318. But you will miss the fabulous sights, such holy Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Gyantse Dzong and Gyantse Kumbum.
