For travelers take
overland tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu, it was a quite a bad news that Massive rock and mud roared on a mountain slope located on the Nepal side of Friendship Highway. Nepal authorities have dispatched rescue teams to that area as soon as possible, but the rescue work was hampered by the narrow road and the occurrence of other minor landslides. Nepal military also assigned helicopters to help. Because the rescue resource is very limited, the helicopter fee is about 275 USD dollars per person.
“We had taken emergency plan immediately after we know about the disaster,” said Debbie Deng, the OP manager of Tibet Vista. “Every customer to Nepal border has been informed by our trip advisor, making sure that they are aware of this contingency,” she continued. “Please do not try to trek through that area, considering that it’s extremely dangerous.”
The landslide was caused by continual rain in the last 2 days. At least 8 people are confirmed dead. The number of death toll is very likely to rise as hundreds of people are missing. The landslide had blocked the Sunkoshi River, posting new threat for the villagers and locals.
Local administration offices in the region said as many as two dozen houses had been swept away while the Friendship Highway was buried. It is one of the shortest and busiest routes that connect Nepal with China’s Tibet. The administration has been planning different measures to open the river blockade and release the water from blocked river.
“If you are already trapped in Sindupalchowk district, please kindly wait for the rescue teams,” Debbie said. “If you haven’t arrived the stricken area and you want to leave as soon as possible, you could also contact us for emergency helicopter service.”
