Ritual walkers, unique and fascinating sight in Lhasa

When you are making a Tibet tour, do not miss the ritual walkers, the unique and fascinating sight in Lhasa. Every morning, ritual walkers can be seen at almost any corner of the Lhasa city, tracking clockwise around monasteries with prayer beads and wheels in hands and chanting some Buddhist sutras in a lower voice, especially around the famous Barkhor Street.

A majority of them are elderly Tibetans, because, as a friend tells, local people are strongly attached to Tibetan Buddhism, and senior Tibetans who may have retired seem to have more time to devote themselves into the piety towards their belief.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that everybody has a next life. Taking ritual walks around certain architectures or places is one way of chanting Buddhist sutras to pray for the following round of living in the world.

If you stay at a hotel near the Barkhor Street in Lhasa, you are advised to get up early and do the ritual walk with the devout ritual walkers. It is a perfect way to experience local Tibetan culture.
