The Tibetan opera Princess Wencheng to debut in Beijing is a grand epic opera telling the stories about the well-known Princess Wencheng in China's Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) and her marriage with Sontzen Gampo, king of Tubo Kingdom in ancient Tibet over 1, 300 years ago.
The grand Tibetan epic opera will debut at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China's most prominent arts center, from Oct 10 to 11.
Princess Wencheng dedicated almost all her life in developing Tibet and bringing advanced Chinese culture to Tibet, therefore she was revered by the Tibetans generation after generation. There are still many sites related to the princess, like the sun-moon mountain in Qinghai,
Jokhang and
Ramoche in Lhasa,
Yungbulakang, etc.
Historically, the marriage of Princess Wencheng promoted the economic and cultural progress in ancient Tibet and strengthened the Han-Tibetan ties.
Up to now, the well-known story has been performed in various art forms to commemorate Princess Wencheng, especially in Tibet.
The greatest innovation to the epic opera includes the subversion of the old mode, adherence to the philosophy of 'mountain, water, people' and the portray of the most loved and revered Princess Wencheng from the perspective of the Tibetan people.
The opera is also highlighted with the original Tibetan music elements and artistic techniques. Watching this opera, you will know more about the history of Tibet, especially its peak time.
