The Scenery at Lhalu Wetland in Lhasa is amazing. More than 95 percent of the wetland is covered by trees and plants. The Lhalu wetland locates in the north of the city of Lhasa.
The Lhalu wetland is the largest and the highest natural wetland in China, with an average elevation at 3,600 meters and an area of 12.2 square kilometers. The nickname “Lungs of Tibet” itself indicates its importance to ecological safety. The Lhalu wetland is home to 62 rare wild birds including black-necked cranes and grey cranes categorized under state protection and other breeds such as bar-headed geese, ruby shelducks and egrets.
A person-in-charge at the Lhalu wetland said, "Acting like an air purifier and sewage filter, the wetland is able to absorb 5,475 tons of dust and process more than 1 million tons of sewage per year."
Statistics from Tibet’s environment department show that the 6,523,500-hectare wetlands, which are composed of lakes, swamps, rivers and other man-made wetlands, account for 4.9 percent of Tibet's whole land.
In recent years, two wetlands, along with other wetland-type natural reserves, have been set up in Tibet. All of them play a significant role in the conservation of Tibet’s wildlife diversity and establishment of Tibet's ecological safety.
