Tibetan New Year Attracts Flocks of Tourists to Tibet

As one of the most important traditional Tibetan festivals celebrated throughout the whole Tibetan Area, the Tibetan New Year attracted flocks of tourists to Tibet. In addition, the traditional Chinese Spring Festival fell just one day apart this year and many Chinese from inland China chose to spend the holiday in Tibet.

Tibetan New Year, Butter Sculpture
We can see beautiful butter sculpture everywhere in Tibet during Tibetan New Year.

For tourists, Tibetan New Year or Losar Festival is a grand feast. Festal customs such as praying, horse racing, greeting relatives and friends and plowing are all worth experiencing.

Tibetan New Year, Prayer Flag Trees
Colorful prayer flag trees can be seen on the top of Tibetan houses everywhere during Losar Festival.

The best way to experience the Tibetan New Year is to stay at a local Tibetan home and celebrate the occasion as the Tibetans do, such as eating Guthuk (a kind of dumpling soup with peas as the special food for Tibetans on the New Year's Eve), praying at monasteries, witnessing the monks chanting Buddhist sutras at the three eminent monasteries in Lhasa (the Drepung Monastery, the Sera Monastery and the Gandan Monastery), learning how to make butter sculptures and hanging prayer flags at the passes of holy mountains for blessing.

You may have missed the chance to do Tibetan New Year Tour in 2013, but there are still many other insteresting festivals on Tibet Tour Calendar for your option or you can wait for the next Tibetan New Year in 2014.
