Known as the purest holy water on Earth, Mansarovar Lake is believed to have magical powers that can purify one’s soul. Worshipped by followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bon, it attracts both pilgrims and global travelers who come to admire its stunning sapphire-blue waters, gain blessings, and embark on a sacred pilgrimage.

Getting to Mansarovar Lake is super easy. The most classic route starts in Lhasa, crossing both the central and western Tibetan Plateau via Shigatse, Tibet Everest Base Camp, and Saga. If you are coming from Nepal, the journey is shorter, crossing the Gyirong port, Nepal-China border, from Kathmandu. For Indian passport holders, you can take the government’s official pilgrimage route from Delhi, passing through the Lipulekh pass.

Where Is Mansarovar Located? Why It’s a Must-Visit for both Pilgrims and Travelers?

At an elevation of 4,588 meters, Lake Mansarovar is located in Puryang County, Ngari Prefecture, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It's about 1,200 kilometers west of Lhasa or just 30 kilometers southeast of the sacred Mount Kailash, Tibet’s holiest mountain.

In addition, due to its proximity to Nepal and India, Lake Mansarovar, one of Tibet’s holiest lakes, is the source of four major rivers, including the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Indus, the Sutlej, and the Karnali. Because of this, it’s worshipped as the Mother of All Rivers.

What Makes Lake Mansarovar So Special for Pilgrims and Global Travelers to Visit?

Revered as the most sacred lake in Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bon, Lake Mansarovar draws countless pilgrims and travelers each year. They travel from all over the world to embark on the sacred Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, a time-honored tradition that has lasted for centuries.

Enjoy the classic Lhasa to Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar tour to explore Tibet's most sacred mountain and lake.

  • In Tibetan Buddhism, we local Tibetans believe that Lake Mansarovar holds the purest water, flowing from the southern side of holy Mount Kailash, Tibet’s holiest mountain. The crystal-clear waters are said to have the magical power to bring inner peace, spiritual blessings, and even cleanse a lifetime of sins.

During the pilgrimage season (April to October), we Tibetans would walk or prostrate ourselves around Lake Mansarovar, while chanting prayers along the way. We believe that by doing so, the sacred lake can help us overcome the five inner struggles ( ignorance, attachment, anger, pride, and jealousy) and will bring peace and blessings to our minds and to the world.

  • In Hinduism, Lake Mansarovar is believed to have been created from the heart of Brahma, the creator god. The holy lake is also closely connected to Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, and is seen as her divine form. Together, they are known as a “divine couple”, with Mount Kailash, Shiva's home, and Lake Mansarovar as their sacred dwelling.

Every year, especially between June and August, many devoted Hindu pilgrims visit the holy Lake Mansarovar as part of the government-organized Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. They would drink the holy water of Lake Mansarovar and take a holy dip to purify their body and soul. Pilgrims also meditate by the lake, perform sacred rituals, and fill bottles with the holy water to bring blessings home and share them with family and friends.

  • In Jainism: Jains believe that Lake Mansarovar is considered a sacred site where the first great teacher, Lord Rishabhanatha, attained enlightenment. Pilgrims believe that walking around the sacred lake helps purify their souls and connect with Lord Rishabhanatha’s wisdom.
  • In Bon: Followers are deeply convinced that Lake Mansarovar existed before the universe and is the source of the cosmic energy that created everything. They will circle the Lake Mansarovar in a counterclockwise direction, seeking blessings and protection from the deities.

For global travelers and spiritual seekers, the sacred Lake Mansarovar is like a timeless natural sanctuary. Visiting this holy lake offers you a rare spiritual odyssey, a chance to step away from the hustle of daily life, heal, reflect, and reconnect with both nature and the divine.

You can take your time to meditate or stroll along the sapphire-blue Lake Mansarovar, surrounded by snow-capped peaks like Mount Kailash. It’s the perfect place to find inner peace and perhaps spot rare wildlife like Tibetan antelopes, wild donkeys, and marmots. If you like, you can also join the pilgrims walking around the lake on their sacred journey.

Scattered around Lake Mansarovar are ancient Tibetan monasteries where great Buddhist masters like Guru Rinpoche (Lotus-born Buddha) once meditated. After the 3-day Mt. Kailash trek, you can relax in soothing hot springs and explore peaceful Buddhist retreats nearby.

These serene spots, rich in authentic Buddhist culture, offer the perfect setting for spiritual healing and high-altitude trekking in Tibet.

Winter at Lake Mansarovar is a peaceful yet challenging time. By November, the edges of the lake start to freeze, and by January and February, the entire lake is covered in thick, blue ice. This is the quietest time of year, with very few visitors, making it an incredibly peaceful time for those who brave the cold.

However, because flying from Lhasa Gonggar International Airport (3,570m) to Ngari Gunsa Airport (4,274m) involves a quick altitude gain, this option is not recommended for most travelers. Only those who are in excellent physical condition or have already acclimatized to the altitude may consider it.

Q6: Do I need a special permit to visit Mansarovar?

Yes, you'll need a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet, which can be arranged through an authorized local travel agency like ours. Additionally, foreign visitors need to obtain a border pass for the region.

These permits are typically arranged as part of our Kailash Mansarovar tour package, and our local Tibetan guide will take care of them in advance. No worries at all!

Q7: What should I bring with me when visiting Lake Mansarovar?

Visiting Lake Mansarovar is similar to traveling to other parts of Tibet. The rule of thumb is to stay warm and protect yourself from the harsh sun and winds. We recommend traveling light.

Make sure to bring warm clothing and dress in layers, including thermal wear, a down jacket, and a beanie for extra warmth. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm to protect against the strong sun at high altitudes.

A sturdy pair of comfortable sports shoes is also essential, along with personal items like toiletries, any necessary medication, a power bank, a thermal bottle, and some cash.

Q8: Is it safe to travel to Mansarovar?

Yes, it’s very safe to travel to Lake Mansarovar, especially with the support of our experienced local Tibetan guides and professional team.

With that said, due to the high altitude (around 4,590 meters), proper acclimatization is key before heading to the Lake Mansarovar in towering western Tibet.

Our carefully designed Kailash Mansarovar tours include enough acclimatization days in Lhasa, Shigatse, or at the Nepal-China border. With oxygen supplies and our attentive local Tibetan guides by your side throughout the journey, you’ll have all the support you need. So, there’s no need to worry!
