Lake Manasarovar Tour: Usually Half a Day, But 3 to 4 Days for Trekking or Meditation If Time Allows

The Lake Manasarovar Kora is a sacred journey around the holy lake, covering about 90 kilometers in total.

Starting from Chiu Monastery, you can take a drive clockwise along the lake, which takes about 4 hours. En route, you’ll stop at several spots along the way, visit the ancient monasteries, and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Kailash and Namunani Peak from different angles by the lakeside.

How to Get to Lake Manasarovar and When is the Best Time to Visit?

The most popular way to get to Lake Manasarovar is by overland from Lhasa or Kathmandu.

Following the popular Lhasa to Everest Base Camp tour route, you’ll head to Saga after visiting the Northern Everest Base Camp in Tibet. After a night’s stay in Saga, you’ll continue the drive all the way northwest to Lake Manasarovar via the G219 National Highway. It is also known as the popular Xinjiang-Tibet Highway.

The overland journey from Kathmandu to Lake Manasarovar is shorter, covering around 830 kilometers via the Gyirong Border. Generally, it takes 3 days from the border to Saga, including one nigh stay in Gyirong for better acclimatize to the altitude raising at Tibet.

Another off-the-beaten-path route to Lake Manasarovar is from Kashgar, Xinjiang. Driving along the G219 National Highway is the most thrilling overland adventure to Tibet.

For those who are short on time, there are also flights to Ngari that offer shorter trips to Lake Manasarovar by air. Since you can not flight to the holy lake directly, you can take a flight to Ngari Gunsan Airport first, and then take a drive to Lake Manasarovar.

The flight to Ngari Airport is only from Lhasa, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Kashgar. And the scheduled flights are limited, with just 2 to 4 flights per day. After flying to Ngari Gunsa Airport, you need to take another 3-hour drive (about 229.5 km) from the airport to Lake Manasarovar.

This is the most popular overland journey from Kathmandu to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

No matter which way you choose to go, the best time to visit Lake Manasarovar is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant is comfortable for sightseeing and trekking around the lake. With less rainfall, you can enjoy the clearest views of the lake and Mount Kailash together.

Summer is also a good time for vibrant views of the grassland by the lakeside. But the rainfall in the summer months may bring clouds and fogs that cover the mountain peaks and make the kora route more muddy.

From late October to early April, the temperature of Lake Manasarovar is quite low at such a high altitude. Roads to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar may be blocked due to heavy snow in the winter months. Even in early April, there may be snowfall in this region.
