Overview

This long 21-day tour of China from Mumbai is a great way to explore more of one of the greatest ancient empires on the planet. Taking you from the trading capital of Asia to the heights of the Tibetan plateau and the desert oasis of Xinjiang, as well as the capitals of historic Imperial China, this is a well-rounded tour for budding explorers.

The tour starts in Hong Kong after your arrival from Mumbai, and gives you the chance to explore this ancient trading port, from the famous Repulse Bay to the heights of Victoria Peak. Then take the short flight to Chengdu, home of the giant pandas and the capital of Sichuan Province. After touring the city and visiting the rare giant pandas, board the train to Lhasa, relaxing for two nights in luxurious travel. In Lhasa, you can experience the true culture of Tibet, and visit the Buddhist sites of the iconic Potala Palace and the Sacred Jokhang Temple, as well as several Buddhist monasteries. Then you take the flight to Xi’an, home of the Terracotta Army of the First Emperor of China, before heading north to Dunhuang, home of the famous Mogao Grotto and its vast Buddhist library. Then take the overnight train to Turpan, the entry-point to Xinjiang from the east, from where you will drive to Urumqi, the second city of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Prefecture. From there, take the flight to Kashgar, the Xinjiang capital, to explore this remote northwestern area of China. Then fly direct to Beijing, the Chinese capital, to visit the tombs of the 16th century Ming Emperors and the Great Wall at Mutianyu. You can also tour the city to visit the famous Summer Palace and stroll around the Forbidden City of the Chinese Emperor.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from Mumbai to Hong Kong

Taking international flight from Mumbai International Airport to Hong Kong International Airport. As you arrive in Hong Kong, the vibrant and financial hub in Asia, our local guide will be expecting you at the Hong Kong International Airport. Later, the guide will escort you to your hotel. After you check in, the rest of the day is for you to have a good rest or explore the surroundings yourself. (The direct international flight from Mumbai to Hong Kong suggests to be booked by yourself.)

Day 2: Hong Kong Tour: Aberdeen Harbor, Repulse Bay, Victoria Peak

The first stop of today’s tour would be the floating community of Aberdeen. Aberdeen is well-known for the floating village and floating seafood restaurants. It’s advisable to hire Sampans (small boats) to enjoy the Aberdeen Harbor. Strolling along Aberdeen Promenade is also a great choice for photographers.

Then we will move to Repulse Bay, beautiful beach without bustle and hustle as well as one of the most expensive residential areas in HK. At sunset, we are about to reach the foot of Victoria Peak and gradually ascend (by tram or hiking) to reach to peak to enjoy the stunning panoramic view of HK harbor from the hill.

Day 3: Fly from Hong Kong to Chengdu and Visit Wide and Narrow Alley

Take the morning flight from HK to Chengdu. Upon your arrival in Chengdu, you will be escorted to the hotels. In the afternoon, tourists will tour Wide and Narrow Alley in downtown Chengdu. The lively and vibrant alley showcases the old life style and houses of Chengdu. You can enjoy the tea and tasty local snacks and buy interesting souvenirs as you tour this pedestrianized area.

Day 4: Chengdu Tour: Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center, Jin Li Street, Wuhou Shrine and board the train in the evening

Chengdu is the major overland gateway to Tibet and home to giant pandas. In the morning, we will drive about half an hour to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center, where you will catch pandas' feeding time, they are at their most active, both Adults and Babies. There's a wealth of information and a panda museum in this 230-hectare park 10 km (6 miles) north of Chengdu. It takes about 2.5 hours to visit this site.

In the afternoon, we will move back to downtown Chengdu to visit Jin Li Street, a vivid replica of the old commercial street of Qin, Han, and Three Kingdom dynasties. You can take a leisurely stroll along the street and buy some souvenirs. After that, we can tour the famous Wuhou Shrine, where tourists can learn more of the celebrated warriors of Three Kingdoms and much more Chinese poetry and calligraphy, etc. can also be seen.

Board the train in the evening to Lhasa. The Tibet Railway offers a stunning alpine scenery full of snow caped mountains, lakes, vast plateau plains littered with nomads, yaks, Tibetan antelope and many other wild life elements. Tibet Railway is the world’s highest Railway. The 1,956 kilometers rail line expands a vast highland area with an average altitude of 4,300 meters above sea level, the highest being 5,068 meters.

Day 5: Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Sightseeing by train

Today the train will move on Qinghai Tibet Plateau, You will pass by Yuzhufeng, which is the main peak of Kunlun Mountain, World Natural Heritage Kekexili Naturel Preserve, Tuotuo River-the resource of Yangtze River, Naqu Grassland and Cuona Lake.

Day 6: Arrive in Lhasa in the morning

When you arrive in Lhasa in the morning, your guide will greet you and take you to your hotel. Tourists may view the Yarlung Tsangpo River/ Bhamaputra River (the longest and largest river in Tibet) and Lhasa river on their way to Lhasa.

After arriving in Lhasa, you can take a rest and get acclimatized to high altitude. If you feel to go out, then you can go to the Potala Square, where you will enjoy the fountain with different colors and get amazing photos of the Potala and around.

For the new-comers of Tibet, to get acclimatized to the high altitude in Tibet. Having a good sleep in your hotel is a good option. Don not rush to visit attractions inside Lhasa city.

Day 7: Lhasa Tour - Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street (B)

Today's tour will first bring you to the Potala Palace which is the winter palace of the Dalai lama. It was put to use since the 7th Century by the 33rd great king of Tibet. The most valuable collections of Potala Palace are the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and meditation Cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet.

Then after lunch, tourists head to Jokhang Temple which was founded by the 33rd great king of Tibet in the 7th century. Inside you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. Outside, you can see pilgrims making prostrating in front of Jokhang Temple. Around the temple is Barkhor Street, where you can do kora (a religious circle of a building or mountain) with pilgrims and locals, and explore the old market. Besides, we can taste Tibetan tea with locals in tea house.

With time permitting, you may go with tour guide to visit Tibetan handicraft art or Tibetan Traditional Medicine center. You can upgrade your service to enjoy Tibetan Culture Show in the evening (fr. 60USD)

Day 8: Lhasa Tour - Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery (B)

In the morning, you are going to visit Drepung Monastery which is one of the “great three” Gelug monasteries of Tibet, founded in 1416 by Jamyang choge, one of the Tsongkhapa’s main disciples. You can visit the biggest monastery kitchen inside the monastery and enjoy Buddhist Sculpture Carving workshop near Drepung.

In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery which is another one of the “great three” Gelug monasteries of Tibet. The hot attraction is the monks debate at around 3 - 5 in the afternoon. In addition, you can tour the Tibetan religious scripture printing house. Inside the monastery, you can see three sand Mandalas and colorful Rock Painting of Buddha.

Day 9: Take a flight from Lhasa to Xian (B)

The whole morning is free for you. After having lunch, you will be transferred to Lhasa Gonggar Airport to take a flight to Xian.

Upon your arrival in Xian, your local tour guide will pick you up at the airport and escort you to your hotel.

Day 10: Xian Day Tour (B)

Visit the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. You will be attracted by the life-sized warrior figures, horses and different ancient weapons, each of which have distinct facial expressions and positions.

The rest of today, you will also visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Ancient City Wall.

Day 11: Take a flight from Xian to Dunhuang (B)

Visit Muslim Street or Shaanxi Provincial Museum in the morning, and then take a flight to Dunhuang in the afternoon.

Upon arrival in Dunhuang, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 12: Dunhuang Day Tour (B)

Transfer to visit Mogao Grottoes, which is considered as the great treasure house of Buddhist arts in existence.

In the afternoon, visit Crescent Spring and Singing Sand Dune, where you can see the desert scenery and ride the camel in the desert.

Day 13: Dunhuang Day Tour and Stay Overnight Train to Turpan (B)

Go out of Dunhuang to see Yumenguan Pass, the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty, and Desert Discovery at Yadan Landform Park.

In the afternoon, go to Liuyuan (2 hours’ driving), where you can take an overnight train from Dunhuang to Turpan (about 9 hours).

Day 14: Turpan Day Tour (B)

Upon arrival, take a short break and then visit Suleiman Minaret, the Karez Wells, the Ruins of the Ancient City of Jiaohe, and local vineyard.

Day 15: Turpan to Urumqi (B)

In the morning, transfer from Turpan to Urumqi to visit the holy Heavenly Lake, one of the most famous alpine lakes in the world. Located in the middle of the Bogda Peak, the crescent-shaped lake is about 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) above the sea level.

After the tour, you will be transferred back to downtown.

Day 16: Urumqi to Kashgar (B)

Fly from Urumqi to Kashgar in the morning. Transfer to Silk Road after arriving in Kashgar Airport. Kashgar is the largest oasis in the whole China. The highlights of today include the Id Kah Mosque, the Old Towm and the Abakh Khoja Tomb.

Day 17: Kashgar Day Tour (B)

Explore the scenery of the Pamirs. Driving along Karakoram Highway, you can visit Comer Lake, Sand Mountain, Mt. Muztagh Ata, and Lake Karakul.

The most interesting thing that you should not miss is the Sunday Market, one of the largest weekly markets of Asia, as you reach there on Sunday. Especially in the morning you can see the highway, crowded with full-load donkey trucks carrying vegetable, fruits vendors, children and women.

Day 18: Fly from Kashgar to Beijing

The guide will transfer you to the airport for your onward flight to Beijing. After around 5 hours’ flying, you will land in Beijing and be picked up by the local guide. Then the guide will take you to the reserved hotel. The rest of the day is for you to have a good rest.

Day 19: Beijing Day Tour: Forbidden City and Summer Palace

Today is guided tour to Forbidden City and Summer Palace which are the traditional must-see places in Beijing. The Forbidden City is the best preserved imperial palace in China and the largest ancient palatial structure in the world. The splendid architecture of the Forbidden City represents the essence and culmination of traditional Chinese architectural accomplishment. The Summer Palace is the largest royal garden in the world built in Qing Dynasty. The grandeur and beauty of the Palace is overwhelming and is sure to impress anyone.

Day 20: Beijing Day Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall and Ming Tombs

The Great Wall tour proves that China was one of the strongest countries in its history. Stretching thousands of kilometers, the Great Wall protected the ancient Chinese against the invasion of the enemy from its north side for more than 1000 years; the Great Wall was listed as one of the world's eight wonders. Mutianyu Great Wall, featured “graceful”, enjoy the best quality among all Wall sections, 80km north-east of Beijing with 22 ancient watchtowers, about one every kilometer. (Cable car is optional if you do not want to walk)

Then you will visit the Ming Tombs, the burial site of the emperor Zhuli, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty who ruled for 22 years until his death in 1424.

Day 21: Depart from Beijing

In the morning, you will first visit the historic Temple of Heavens, which is the largest city square in the world and the spiritual heart of China, and then move on to the famous Hutongs, the traditional courtyard residence in narrows alleys in Beijing. It is a great place to know the folk culture and old quarters of Beijing city.

After that, the guide will transfer you to the airport and help you get on board. There is one direct flight leaving daily from Beijing to Mumbai and the overall travel time is around 9 hours.
