Trip to Mount Everest in Tibet: My Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure to the Third Pole of the World

Written by Niven Ang from Singapore 0 COMMENTS

We are a group of 3 travelers who took a trip to Tibet using Tibet Vista, which provided a blend of awe-inspiring landscapes, profound cultural experiences, and encounters that deeply enriched my understanding of this unique plateau.

The trip was well planned, spanning around a week and taking us from Lhasa to Shigatse, then to the iconic Everest Base Camp, and back, allowing a gradual immersion into both Tibetan culture and the dramatic Himalayan scenery.

Our tour was led by Mr. Kunga, who was really friendly and knowledgeable, and made sure everyone was included and helped us with all the arrangements throughout the trip.

Hop on the Scenic Tibet Train from Xining to Lhasa, Slowly Ascending to the Lofty Tibetan Plateau

We started on July 5 with the scenic Tibet train ride from Xining to Lhasa, in which the train ticket was booked through Tibet Vista at an extra cost. The documents, such as the Tibet travel permit, were sent to us in advance by Tibet Vista, and the clearance at the train stations was hassle-free.

The train ride was about 20 hours long, which traversed the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, allowing us to gradually acclimatise to the high altitude, taking in the sweeping vistas of grasslands, rivers, and snow-capped peaks along the way.

Arriving in Lhasa on July 6, we were amazed by the crisp, clear air and the serene atmosphere that seemed to pervade the city. At 3,650 meters, we could feel that we had some difficulties in breathing due to the thin air.

However, as we took altitude sickness medication before our journey to Lhasa, we did not experience any major effects of altitude sickness. After transferring to the hotel, we spent the evening resting and adjusting to the altitude, as well as venturing out to find dinner on our own, where we had a local delicacy, Claypot Chicken soup, which was really delicious.

We took the upgrade to a 4-star hotel and were assigned to the Susheng Guizhang Manor Hotel, which used to be a Sheraton hotel. The hotel was average, but it had piped oxygen in the room, and the breakfast was mediocre at best.

Dive Into Lhasa’s Vibrant Culture: Explore the Wonders of Drepung and Sera Monasteries

The next day, we embarked on our immersive Lhasa tour, visiting two of the city’s most important monasteries: Drepung and Sera.

Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world, left us in awe with its vast complex. We were fascinated by the monastic life still thriving within its walls and the history that seemed etched into every stone. For lunch, we ate at an eatery near the monastery, where we had a glimpse into the type of food the monks typically eat.

Later, Sera Monastery offered an entirely different experience, as Tibet Vista arranged for us to visit during the famous Tibetan monk debate sessions. Watching these debates, full of passion and intellectual rigor, provided a glimpse into the vibrant spiritual and scholarly life of Tibetan Buddhism.

Uncover Lhasa’s Iconic Landmarks: The Majestic Potala Palace & Sacred Jokhang Temple

The third day, we focused on Lhasa’s iconic landmarks.

The Potala Palace, with its imposing white and red walls perched above the city, is an architectural marvel. Touring its halls and chapels, we were struck by the intricate murals, sacred artifacts, and the sense of reverence that permeates every corner.

From there, we were then brought to Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Lhasa, observing pilgrims prostrating themselves along the Barkhor Circuit. Wandering through Barkhor Street, we enjoyed the lively local atmosphere, sampling Tibetan snacks and browsing the many shops selling traditional crafts. The day was a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and the vibrancy of daily life.

Scenic Drive to Shigatse: Discover Yamdrok Lake, a Heartwarming Tibetan Family Visit, and the Majestic Karola Glacier

On day four, we left Lhasa for Shigatse, travelling through some of Tibet’s most scenic landscapes.

Our route took us past Yamdrok Lake, whose turquoise waters contrasted sharply with the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creating a breathtaking tableau. We also had the unique opportunity to visit a local Tibetan family, where we had lunch, also gaining personal insight into traditional Tibetan life.

Further along, the Karola Glacier stood as a dramatic reminder of Tibet’s raw natural beauty. By the time we reached Shigatse, we were both exhilarated and humbled by the sheer diversity of experiences the day had offered. For the 4-star hotel option, we stayed at the Jove Mountain hotel, which was, again, average. The breakfast was decent, and we got to try a local specialty, Tsampa here.

Reaching Everest Base Camp: Standing in the Shadow of the World's Highest Peak

Day five brought the highlight of this trip for us, which was the journey to Everest Base Camp.

Ascending to 5,200 meters, the drive via the famous Gawula Pass offered panoramic views of the Himalayas, culminating in the dramatic sight of Rongbuk Monastery and, of course, the majestic Mt. Everest.

Standing in the shadow of the world’s highest peak is a humbling experience, one that evokes both awe and reflection. The air was really thin here, and walking a couple of meters left us gasping for air.

However, our tour guide gave us canned oxygen in case we needed it. For the 4-star option, we stayed at the Rongbuk Hotel, the best accommodation at the Tibet EBC. The room had piped oxygen, which we agreed was vital in ensuring a good night’s rest. There was no shower, and the toilet was shared amongst the rooms.

Journey Back to Lhasa: Immerse Yourself in Tibetan Culture and Savory Traditional Cuisine

The return journey to Shigatse on day six took the same route. We were treated to a Tibetan cultural experience where we got to see a traditional Tibetan performance, providing insight into local music, dance, and folklore, along with a feast of traditional Tibetan food.

On the final day, we travelled back to Lhasa, with stops at Tashilunpo Monasterywhich is the home of the Panchen Lama. Tashilunpo’s golden statues and ornate architecture were a magnificent end to the journey, while the winding river valleys offered a serene counterpoint to the high-altitude vistas.

Arriving back in Lhasa, we felt a sense of completion, having traversed some of Tibet’s most sacred and scenic locations and having gained insight into the lives of its people.

An Inspiring Journey: Tibet’s Natural Grandeur and Rich Cultural Depth

Overall, this trip to Mount Everest was an extraordinary combination of natural grandeur, cultural depth, and personal reflection. From the spiritual intensity of Lhasa’s monasteries to the awe-inspiring landscapes leading to Everest, every moment was imbued with a sense of wonder.

The itinerary was well-balanced, allowing time to acclimatise, explore, and absorb the unique rhythm of Tibetan life. For anyone seeking a journey that blends adventure, culture, and introspection, Tibet is a destination that challenges, inspires, and ultimately transforms.

My Final Tips for Future Travellers:

As we went in July, the sun was scorching during the day, so bring a hat and use sunblock. Besides, Mount Everest Base Camp can get cold at night, even during summer, so bring a thick jacket.

Many places are not air-conditioned and get hot during summer, so you can consider bringing a portable fan. You may want to consult a doctor to get some altitude sickness medication to help you acclimate better.
