I booked my trip 10 months in advance because my old passport was expiring and I needed to apply for a new one, which was difficult to predict. This also allowed me to take advantage of an early booking discount.
While researching Tibet travel online, I came across Tibet Vista through several detailed travel reviews on TripAdvisor and YouTube recommendations praising their reliable local expertise and smooth permit arrangements.
Since traveling to Tibet involves many special procedures, I felt more confident choosing a Lhasa-based company that truly understood the region and could provide direct on-the-ground support.
Their classic 8-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp small group tour immediately caught my attention because it perfectly combined Tibet’s cultural highlights in Lhasa with the once-in-a-lifetime experience of visiting Everest Base Camp, all at a comfortable pace with a small group atmosphere that felt both personal and flexible.

From Tibet Permit to a Warm Tibetan Welcome: My Smooth Arrival in Lhasa
Communication with Tibet Vista was characterized by quick response times and a friendly atmosphere. I even received a digital copy of my Tibet Travel Permit, required for entry into Tibet, before my departure.
I entered China via Bangkok. At check-in for my flight to Lhasa with a layover in Kunming, I had to show proof of my Tibet Travel Permit. At my hotel in Kunming, I received the original paper copy, which Tibet Vista had sent via express delivery. This allowed me to enter Tibet without any problems.
After landing at Lhasa Gonggar International Airport, I was immediately struck by the crisp mountain air and the breathtaking views of the surrounding Tibetan plateau. As I walked out of the arrival hall, our local Tibetan guide from Tibet Vista was already waiting with a warm smile and a traditional white khata scarf, making me feel genuinely welcomed to Tibet.
The guide spoke excellent English and quickly helped our fellow travelers organize our luggage before leading us to the comfortable tourist vehicle waiting outside the airport.
The drive from the airport to downtown Lhasa was an unforgettable first introduction to Tibet. Along the way, our guide shared fascinating insights about Tibetan culture, local customs, and the history of Lhasa, helping us better understand this unique destination.
Passing by the Yarlung Tsangpo River and distant snow-capped mountains, excitement grew among all the fellow travelers in the vehicle. After about an hour’s drive, we safely arrived at our hotel in downtown Lhasa, where the guide assisted everyone with check-in and kindly reminded us to rest well and take it easy to adapt to the high altitude.

The following Lhasa tour felt both peaceful and deeply inspiring. To better adapt to the altitude, we explored the city at a relaxed pace, wandering through ancient monasteries, lively streets, and quiet corners filled with the scent of burning incense.
Every morning, I woke up to clear blue skies and the distant sound of prayer chants drifting through the air, reminding me that Tibet was unlike anywhere I had ever visited before.
One of the most unforgettable moments was finally standing before the magnificent Potala Palace. Towering above the city from Red Hill, the palace looked even more breathtaking in person than in photographs.
Climbing the ancient stairways slowly, I could feel the spiritual atmosphere grow stronger with every step. Inside, dimly lit chapels, golden statues, and centuries-old murals told stories of Tibet’s rich history and profound Buddhist traditions. It was not just a sightseeing experience, but a deeply emotional journey into the heart of Tibetan culture.
Our Tibetan guide made every visit even more meaningful by sharing personal stories, local legends, and thoughtful explanations about Tibetan Buddhism and daily life.
Whether we were joining pilgrims walking around Jokhang Temple or enjoying sweet Tibetan tea in a local teahouse, I always felt warmly connected to the people and traditions around me.
In the evenings, returning to the comfortable hotel after a fulfilling day of exploration felt especially rewarding. The careful arrangements by Tibet Vista allowed me to simply relax, absorb the beauty of Lhasa, and fully enjoy every precious moment of the journey.

Our Incredible Journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp via Shigatse City
Leaving Lhasa behind, our journey toward Everest Base Camp began with one breathtaking landscape after another. As we drove higher into the mountains, the road wound across dramatic mountain passes decorated with colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
One of the most unforgettable moments was arriving at the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s most sacred lakes. Under the bright Tibetan sunshine, the lake shimmered in incredible shades of blue, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rolling hills dotted with grazing yaks and sheep.
We stopped several times along the way, simply to admire the silence, fresh mountain air, and the vast beauty of the Tibetan plateau stretching endlessly before us.
Continuing westward through Gyantse and toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, the scenery gradually became even more dramatic and remote.
Along the route, we passed traditional Tibetan villages, ancient monasteries, and barley fields swaying beneath the towering Himalayas in the distance. In Shigatse, we had the chance to experience a quieter side of Tibetan life before preparing for the higher elevations ahead.
With every mile, anticipation grew among our group as the mighty Himalayas appeared closer and more majestic. The journey itself felt just as memorable as the destination, offering a deeper connection to Tibet’s culture, landscapes, and the resilient people who call this extraordinary region home.

Standing Before the Roof of the World: My Unforgettable Everest Base Camp Experience
Of all the unforgettable moments during my Tibet journey, reaching Everest Base Camp was undoubtedly the emotional highlight of the trip.
After days of traveling across the vast Tibetan Plateau, the long-awaited sight of Mount Everest finally appeared before us, standing silently yet powerfully beneath the golden evening light. Even with the thinner air at high altitude, I felt completely overwhelmed by the majesty of the world’s highest mountain. No photograph or documentary could truly prepare me for the feeling of standing face to face with Everest in person.
As night fell over the Himalayas, the atmosphere at base camp became even more magical.
Wrapped in warm layers against the freezing mountain air, we stepped outside in the middle of the night and looked up at a sky unlike anything I had ever seen before. The Milky Way stretched brilliantly above Everest, with countless stars shining in perfect clarity across the darkness.
A few hours later, we watched the first rays of sunrise slowly touch the summit of Mount Everest, turning the peak golden as the entire landscape awakened in silence. It was one of those rare moments in life that felt almost unreal, peaceful, humbling, and deeply moving all at once.
Although I had started this adventure alone, I never truly felt alone during the journey. Sharing these extraordinary experiences with fellow travelers created a warm sense of connection that made the trip even more meaningful.
Along the way, there was also a small misunderstanding regarding whether I would stay in a tent or a guesthouse at base camp. Thankfully, after a quick phone call with Tibet Vista, everything was handled smoothly and generously, and I was able to stay comfortably at Rongbuk Hotel near the famous Rongbuk Monastery. Waking up near the world’s highest monastery, surrounded by the immense beauty of the Himalayas, became a memory that I know will stay with me forever.

From the moment I was transferred from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to my hotel in downtown Lhasa until the final ride back to the airport at the end of the journey, everything was organized smoothly and professionally.
Every part of my Tibet tour, from sightseeing arrangements to transportation between destinations, felt carefully planned and thoughtfully managed, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy the experience without any worries.
Throughout the trip, we made many well-timed photo stops at stunning viewpoints across Tibet. These pauses gave everyone the chance to capture the incredible beauty of the landscapes, monasteries, sacred lakes, and historical landmarks through photos and videos.
Beyond sightseeing, the journey also included hands-on cultural experiences, such as making traditional Tibetan incense cones and printing colorful Tibetan prayer patterns onto cloth. These small but meaningful activities brought us closer to the local culture and made the journey feel even more personal.
What touched me most, however, were the close encounters with the Tibetan people themselves, whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on me.
Our Tibetan tour guide, in particular, played an essential role in shaping the journey. At every stop, we received detailed and engaging explanations about Tibetan history, religion, local customs, and daily life, which greatly enriched our understanding of the region.
As a traveler over 80 years old, I especially appreciated the patience, care, and support I received from both the guide and several fellow travelers, particularly when climbing the many stairways at monasteries and historic sites. Their kindness and encouragement transformed the trip from simply a sightseeing tour into a truly heartwarming experience that I will always cherish.
All overnight stays were in good to very good hotels. All accommodations were also equipped with oxygen equipment. Breakfast (included) was mostly a well-stocked buffet. Lunch and dinner (sometimes included) were eaten outside the hotel in restaurants or bistros.
Regarding the use of social media such as WhatsApp and Instagram, China, and therefore Tibet, offers a good opportunity to practice digital abstinence. WeChat or an eSIM would be suitable alternatives.
All of this at a price-performance ratio that is truly impressive. Therefore, my thanks to everyone who contributed to this unforgettable trip.
