Fulfilling My Tibet Dream: An Unforgettable Journey from the Tibet Railway to Everest Base Camp

Written by Veena from Thailand 0 COMMENTS

My journey to Tibet started in mid-April 2026 with my friend. It was our first time visiting Tibet. One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Tibet was because I had always dreamed of taking the famous Qinghai-Tibet Railway, often called the railway to the "Roof of the World."

For this trip, I chose Tibet Vista Tour to complete my dream journey. Our route was from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp (EBC), and honestly, it became one of the best trips in my life.

Fulfilling My Dream of Visiting Tibet on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

It was a journey where I got to experience many “world’s highest” things at once — taking the train on the world’s highest railway, seeing how people live on the highest plateau in the world, and finally seeing the highest mountain in the world, Everest

The Tibet train journey was one of the highlights for me. I had dreamed about taking this train for many years. Watching the landscape slowly change from cities to grasslands and snow mountains made the journey feel special. I spent a lot of time looking out of the window because the scenery was so different from what I usually see in Thailand.

Getting the First Impression of Tibet with a Lhasa City Tour

During the first few days, our trip started with a Lhasa city tour, visiting monasteries and historical places. Even though I come from Thailand, which is also a Buddhist country, Buddhism in Tibet feels quite different. There are unique stories, traditions, and a special charm behind it. The moment I saw it, I immediately felt, “This is Tibet.”

One of the places that impressed me the most was the Potala Palace. I can honestly say that seeing it in photos is completely different from seeing it in real life. It was much more magnificent and beautiful than I imagined.

Our guide, TinTin, also made the experience even better. He had a lot of knowledge and explained everything in great detail. He not only introduced the history and culture but also shared stories about Tibetan daily life, which helped us understand Tibet more deeply.

One thing that really surprised me was how friendly the Tibetan people were. Even though we couldn't speak the same language, we somehow managed to communicate using hand gestures, body language, and Google Translate. It was actually quite fun! I found that many local people were kind and willing to help tourists.

Of course, at some tourist spots, there were people selling bracelets and souvenirs. If you're not interested, don't worry — just smile, say no thank you, and keep walking. It's very easy to handle.

Impressive Potala Palace I finally saw the impressive Potala Palace with my own eyes. What a dream come true!

The Incredible Road Trip from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp

After finishing our city tour, we started our journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp. The scenery along the road was absolutely amazing. Even now, I still remember the feeling when I first saw those views.

One of my favorite places was Yamdrok Lake. The water was incredibly blue — honestly, my photos could not capture how beautiful it really was. The real view was much more stunning.

The journey from Lhasa to EBC was mostly by car, and we spent many hours on the road. However, I never felt bored because both sides of the road were full of beautiful scenery, and there were many photo stops along the way.

My Experience with Altitude and Travel Tips for Future Visitors

One thing I would recommend for future travelers is to prepare motion sickness medicine if you easily get carsick. The road to Everest Base Camp has many sharp curves — some of them almost felt like 180-degree turns!

For altitude adaptation, especially when reaching over 5,000 meters, I started taking altitude sickness medicine early, so luckily I did not have any symptoms.

However, everything had to be done very slowly. I still clearly remember when we visited the Korola Glacier at around 5,000 meters altitude. I only climbed a few steps, but it felt like I had just run 10 kilometers! Haha.

Overall, this trip was not only about visiting famous places. It was about experiencing the culture, landscapes, people, and fulfilling a dream that I had wanted for a long time. It became a truly unforgettable journey for me.

If I could give one piece of advice to future travelers, it would be not to rush. Tibet is a place to enjoy slowly. Drink plenty of water, get enough rest, and prepare for the altitude.

Be Prepared for the Unpredictable Weather in Tibet

I would also recommend is to be prepared for all kinds of weather. When I visited in mid-April, I experienced almost every season in a single trip. There were sunny days with strong sunlight, windy afternoons, and even snowfall.

The coldest place for me was Everest Base Camp. During my visit, the temperature dropped to around -12°C. Before arriving at Everest Base Camp, I met another Thai traveler who had stayed there the night before. He told me the temperature of Everest Base Camp had dropped to -22°C that night!

Because of that, I would strongly recommend bringing enough warm clothing, even if you are visiting during spring. The weather in Tibet can change quickly, and temperatures can be much colder than expected. Staying warm is important not only for your comfort but also to avoid getting sick, so you can fully enjoy the trip from beginning to end.

Why Tibet Is a Destination Everyone Should Visit at Least Once

If you're currently deciding whether to visit Tibet, I would say: just go for it. The experience was absolutely worth it and left me with unforgettable memories.

Tibet is one of those rare places that offers not only breathtaking landscapes but also a unique culture and way of life that is difficult to find anywhere else.

I truly believe it is a destination everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. And who knows? After your first trip, you might end up wanting to return again—just like me. I'm already hoping to come back one day and make another dream come true by visiting Mount Kailash. Haha!
