Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar Tour: My Life-Changing 15-Day Pilgrimage in Tibet with Tibet Vista

Written by Mark Foster from USA 0 COMMENTS

Some trips are enjoyable. A few are unforgettable. And then there are journeys that quietly reshape your perspective long after you return home. My recent visit to Tibet at the beginning of October last year (2025) was firmly in that last category.

I chose the "classic 15 Days Kailash and Manasarovar Small Group Tour," and it covered exactly the places I had dreamed of: Lhasa, Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Everest Base Camp, Rongbuk Monastery, and, of course, the Mount Kailash kora (pilgrimage trek).

Planning for Success: How Preparation Made My Tibet Journey Unforgettable

From the very beginning, this trip felt special. I discovered Tibet Vista on TripAdvisor and was encouraged by the many positive traveller reviews. That gave me the confidence to book early and prepare properly. Looking back now, I can honestly say that good preparation made all the difference.

I started planning about ten months before departure. I knew this would be a high-altitude overland journey, so I prepared in two ways: Gear: new hiking boots, layered clothing, gloves, high-quality prescription sunglasses (essential for all travellers!), a hat, and walking sticks. Fitness: regular cycling, walking, and swimming, plus some weight loss to improve stamina for high altitude trekking.

That preparation paid off. Tibet is breathtaking, but it is not a place to underestimate. Being physically and mentally ready helped me enjoy each day more fully.

From Last-Minute Chaos to Scenic Wonders: My Journey on the Xining to Lhasa Train

Before departure, Derek from Tibet Vista helped my friend Colin and me organize Tibet Travel Permits and train tickets. That support became crucial when our original train from Beijing to Xining was suddenly cancelled due to severe weather and flooding.

At that moment, everything could have collapsed. Instead, Derek responded quickly and efficiently, arranged last-minute flights from Beijing Daxing Airport to Xining, and saved the trip. Without that prompt intervention, our journey might have ended before it properly began. So: thank you again, Derek!

From Xining, we boarded the train to Lhasa, an amazing experience in itself. The train was clean and comfortable, the toilets were well-maintained, and the buffet car was convenient.

We booked soft sleeper berths and watched extraordinary landscapes unfold outside the window. The Xining to Lhasa train is famous as one of the world’s highest railway routes, and riding it felt like entering another world one horizon at a time.

Exploring Lhasa: From the Majestic Potala to the Vibrant Barkhor Streets

Arriving in Lhasa was a highlight from day one. I love Tibetan culture and people, and I was genuinely impressed by how beautiful, clean, and organized the city felt. In my own experience, transport, hotels, restaurants, and shops were all easy to access and of a higher standard than expected.

Culturally, the Lhasa tour exceeded expectations: the Potala Palace was astonishing in scale and symbolism. Jokhang Temple carried a deep spiritual atmosphere. Barkhor Street offered a vibrant rhythm of pilgrims, prayer, commerce, and everyday life. Sera Monastery gave us the unforgettable chance to see monks debating, dynamic, intense, and alive with learning.

The significance of the Potala/Jokhang heritage is globally recognized, and seeing these places in person gave me a much deeper emotional understanding than any photo ever could.

On the Road Through Tibet: Scenic Drives, High Passes, and Friendship Highway Thrills

Travel within Tibet was surprisingly easy because our new, comfortable minibus took us directly to each major attraction. Our driver was professional and calm, and our guide Sonam was always friendly, helpful, and supportive.

One thing worth mentioning, honestly: overland distances in Tibet are enormous. Long days on the road can be tiring. But that is simply the nature of the landscape. The quality of roads and roadside facilities was very good throughout our route, and the comfort level remained strong even on longer drives.

Driving portions of the Friendship Highway was another major thrill. This scenic route is about 800 km and crosses high mountain passes above 5,000 meters, with dramatic transitions in terrain and views. For me, those stretches of road felt cinematic, with wide skies, changing light, and mountains that seemed endless.

Experiencing the Sacred Rongbuk Monastery Near the Everest Base Camp

Reaching the Everest region was profoundly moving. Rongbuk Monastery, near Everest Base Camp, left a lasting impression, especially watching a puja there. It was one of those rare moments when silence, devotion, and landscape merge into something unforgettable. Rongbuk is also widely described as the world’s highest monastery, which adds to the sense of standing at an extraordinary crossroads of nature and faith.

The weather throughout the trip was fantastic, which made every long viewpoint stop and monastery visit even more rewarding.

Mount Kailash Kora: My High-Altitude Adventure and Spiritual Rewards

The greatest impression of all was unquestionably Mount Kailash. We circumambulated it on a three-day Mt. Kailash kora (pilgrimage trek), and this became the emotional and spiritual centre of our entire Tibet journey.

High altitude was the main challenge during the trip. At times, it affected sleep quality and naturally slowed us down, especially on strenuous sections of the kora. But with steady pacing, teamwork, and preparation, I was able to complete the circuit without major difficulties and without extra oxygen. That felt deeply satisfying.

For anyone considering Kailash: this is exactly where preparation matters most. Go in with respect for altitude, and the reward is immense.

Unexpected Joys of My Journey: Amazing Companions, Comfort, and Delicious Food in Tibet

One of the best surprises was the quality of the group dynamic. I met wonderful people from Canada, England, Mexico, and New Zealand. Everyone worked together, stayed positive, and supported one another. No one complained. The atmosphere remained calm, cooperative, and genuinely kind throughout the tour. I’m still in touch with one fellow traveller.

That kind of human chemistry is never guaranteed on group trips, but when it happens, it elevates everything.

I was pleasantly surprised by both accommodation and meals: hotels were cleaner and more comfortable than I had expected. The food was delicious and very affordable. Availability of good restaurants along the route was better than I had imagined for such remote regions (check out Lhasa Kitchen in Lhasa!).

This practical comfort made it easier to focus on the actual journey instead of logistics.

My Travel Hacks for Future Travelers Visiting China, Including the Tibet Autonomous Region

A few practical decisions made travel in China and the Tibet Autonomous Region much smoother:

  • Set up WeChat and Alipay before departure and link them to an international credit card. Download AMap for local navigation.
  • Get a China-compatible eSIM before leaving, for example, from Saily. For ongoing communication with family/friends, arrange a working network in advance. These steps were true lifesavers and reduced stress significantly.
  • Before heading west by plane and train, Colin and I visited Beijing and the Great Wall, both of which were incredibly impressive. That prelude made the overland transition to Tibet feel even more dramatic, from imperial capital history to Himalayan spiritual landscapes in one journey!

This trip confirmed something simple: good preparation leads to good outcomes.

Reflecting on the Unforgettable Tibet Journey: Gratitude, Adventure, and Lasting Impressions

Everything went smoothly overall, and even when we faced a serious disruption in Beijing, it was resolved quickly thanks to excellent support from Tibet Vista, especially Derek.

The guiding, driving, itinerary flow, accommodation, food, group atmosphere, and landmark experiences all combined into one of the most rewarding trips I have ever taken.

Most of all, I came away with deep gratitude: for the landscapes, for the culture, for the people we met, and for the chance to complete the Mount Kailash kora under such favourable conditions.

I would gladly return to Tibet in China one day. Both left a lasting, positive impression on me!
