Mount Kailash Journey from Lhasa: My Sacred 15-Day Spiritual Pilgrimage in Tibet

Written by William Kay from United Kingdom 0 COMMENTS

To round off my year working in China as part of my university course, I decided to fulfil a long-held dream: travelling to Tibet.

I’d always been fascinated by its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and deep cultural and spiritual heritage. After researching different ways to travel there, I quickly discovered that if I was going to make the journey, I wanted to experience as much as possible. That’s what led me to Tibet Vista and their classic 15-day Lhasa to Mount Kailash Manasarovar tour.

Why I Chose Tibet Vista for My Tibet Adventure

Tibet Vista consistently appeared at the top of search results when I looked into organised travel options for Tibet, and it’s easy to see why.

From my very first enquiry, their team were quick to respond, professional, and genuinely helpful in helping me choose the right trip. They answered all my questions clearly and patiently, provided guidance on travel requirements, and handled the Tibet travel permit process smoothly. My flights into and out of Lhasa were also coordinated perfectly with airport pick-up and drop-off services, which made everything hassle-free.

The Warm Welcome in Lhasa: Meeting Fellow Travelers and An Outstanding Guide

When I landed in Lhasa from Chongqing, I was warmly welcomed by one of Tibet Vista’s local guides, who introduced me to a few of my fellow travellers. From that moment onward, the trip was an incredible experience.

Our small group of twelve included people from many different countries and backgrounds, each with their own reasons for wanting to see Tibet. This diversity made the experience even more memorable. The balance between organised daytime activities and free time in the evenings was perfect. We could rest, explore independently, or socialise with other group members.

Our guide, Tenzing, was outstanding. His knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism history, religion, and culture was immense, and he was always enthusiastic, positive, and attentive to everyone’s needs. Because much of the tour took place at high altitudes, sometimes over 5,000 metres, safety was a top priority.

The guides monitored us carefully for any signs of altitude sickness and made supplementary oxygen available whenever needed The tour was well-designed to allow us to gradually acclimatise to the altitude before the physically demanding Mount Kailash Kora trek.

Discovering Lhasa: Dive Into the Heartbeat of Tibetan Culture

We began our journey with three days in Lhasa to adjust to the elevation and get a feel for Tibetan life.

During this time, we explored many of Lhasa’s most iconic landmarks, the majestic Potala Palace, Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Jokhang Temple, and the charming old town area.

Each site offered a fascinating insight into Tibetan Buddhism and the country’s history. I particularly enjoyed wandering through Barkhor Street, watching pilgrims make their kora circuit around Jokhang Temple.

Keep Journeying Westward: Crossing the Amazing Central Tibetan Plateau

After Lhasa, we set off on our journey westward across the stunning Tibetan Plateau toward Mount Kailash.

The scenery was simply beyond words: vast, pristine, and endlessly changing. We passed by Yamdrok Lake with its dazzling turquoise waters, the towering Korola Glacier, and enjoyed spectacular views of Mount Everest from Everest Base Camp.

Each day brought something new and awe-inspiring. We travelled through towns such as Shigatse and Saga before finally reaching Darchen, the starting point for the Mount Kailash Kora.

Embark on the Sacred Mount Kailash Kora Trek: the Ultimate Test of Body and Faith

The three-day Mount Kailash kora trek was one of the most meaningful and challenging parts of the trip. Covering roughly 52 kilometres, the route circles a mountain that holds deep spiritual significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bön followers.

Completing it felt like both a physical and spiritual achievement. Our guides were supportive throughout, ensuring everyone could move at their own pace and stay safe. Standing beneath Mount Kailash, surrounded by prayer flags and fellow pilgrims, was an unforgettable moment.

After finishing the Kora, we visited the sacred Lake Manasarovar, whose clear blue waters are believed to purify the soul. It was a serene and reflective experience, especially after the demanding trek. From there, we began our return journey to Lhasa via Gyirong, Tingri, and Shigatse, retracing our route through more extraordinary landscapes and small Tibetan villages.

Tibet Travel Made Easy and Comfortable with the Help of Tibet Vista

Throughout my Tibet tour, every detail was handled efficiently by Tibet Vista. Our accommodations were clean, comfortable, and exceeded expectations given the remote locations.

Meals were well thought out, with a range of options, from hearty hotel breakfasts to local Tibetan and Chinese dishes at lunch stops, as well as restaurants in the evenings where we could explore independently. The trip struck a great balance between adventure, comfort, and cultural immersion.

Looking back, the highlights for me were completing the Mount Kailash Kora, standing face-to-face with Mount Everest, and visiting the magnificent Potala Palace. These were all experiences I once thought I would only ever see in photos. To have witnessed them in person felt truly surreal.

Beyond the incredible scenery and historical sites, what made this trip so special were the people. Our guide and drivers were professional and friendly, always going above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and informed.

My fellow travellers were equally wonderful. We shared laughter, challenges, and countless memorable moments together. By the end, it felt like we’d all formed a small global family.
