Explore the Spiritual Heart of Tibet: My Unforgettable 5-day Lhasa and Yamdrok Lake Tour with Tibet Vista

A remarkable trip to Tibet, one to remember.

My first time in Tibet was in 2010. Since then, I've always wanted to visit Tibet again. My partner and I explored the options and chose Tibet Vista. We had a good feeling from the very first moment. We communicated with an agent, Zoe. She responded the same day, which was very helpful for our planning.

Tibet Vista offers various and budget-friendly Tibet small group tours, not only in Tibet but also in other neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan. We chose a five-day Lhasa impression tour. It's conveniently located near Lhasa, so we didn't have to travel too much.

Why We Chose the Scenic Train Journey to Lhasa Over Flying

There are two options to reach Lhasa: by train from inland Chinese cities or by plane. We chose the Tibet train so we could acclimatize to the altitude. Lhasa is at an altitude of 3,656 meters, which definitely requires enough acclimatization.

Tibet Vista also arranged this train journey for us, which took almost 24 hours from Xining. We really wanted more privacy and therefore booked a soft sleeper, which normally sleeps four people. This was also perfectly arranged. The name "soft sleeper" doesn't live up to its name; the beds were very hard.

However, the scenic Tibet train journey from Xining was magical, with beautiful mountain views, small villages and towns, herds of yak, and ravines. It may be less comfortable than the plane, but it's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

My First Impressions of Lhasa: Unlocking the Mysteries of Tibetan Culture

Upon arriving in Lhasa, we were greeted by our local Tibetan guide. We also noticed that many other passengers on the train had chosen Tibet Vista.

The elevation difference in Lhasa was clearly noticeable, despite having been ascending at a leisurely pace for 24 hours. I did get a mild headache and felt dizzy. After everyone gathered, we were taken to our hotel in the city. A mid-range hotel was included in the tour, but we decided to stay at a different one.

Discover Tibet’s Spiritual Heart: Ancient Monasteries, Lively Monk Debates, and Sacred Traditions

The next day, we were picked up and began our first day tour in Lhasa. The group consisted of about 10 people of various nationalities. Because it was so small, we quickly connected with everyone.

The program included a visit to Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. Both monasteries are typically Tibetan, beautifully decorated, and have a serene atmosphere. We were also able to attend the Tibetan monk debate, which was a very interesting experience.

Explore the Iconic Potala Palace: Tibet’s Living History Awaits

The second day was dedicated to a visit to the Potala Palace, the former residence of the Dalai Lama. It's a bit of a walk, and the altitude makes it challenging, but it's also very worthwhile. It's impossible to visit Lhasa without seeing the Potala Palace.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed lunch together in the center of Lhasa. The food was delicious. We also visited Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street. The guide was very knowledgeable and told us a lot about the culture and history.

Barkhor Street is a shopping area surrounding the Jokhang Temple. The vibrant market I remembered from 2010, where local vendors offered authentic musical instruments, beautiful jewelry, delicious food, T-shirts, and wooden statues, has since been transformed with new shops offering a variety of souvenirs. The entire Barkhor Street and Barkhor Square buzz with pilgrims, shoppers, and prayer wheels, blending daily Tibetan life with vibrant market energy.

Scenic Escapes from Lhasa: Discover the Beauty of Yamdrok Lake and Tibetan Life

On the third day, we ventured outside Lhasa. Our tour bus took us along a beautiful route through the nearby mountains. We also stopped at Yamdrok Lake, one of the most famous holy lakes in Tibet. Fortunately, the weather was kind to us; the sun was shining, giving the lake a beautiful turquoise color. Time has not stood still here either.

Around the lake are many vendors offering their animals for photos. These include small goats, lambs, and dogs such as Tibetan Mastiffs. Well-adorned white Tibetan yak rides are also available.

The journey included some steep climbs, with a mountain pass that reached 4,900 meters in altitude. A few travelers felt a bit unwell, likely due to the winding roads and high elevation. But with scenic views all around, the experience was worth it.

Around noon, we stopped with a Tibetan family who had prepared lunch for us. There was plenty of choice, and everything was well-organized.

A Relaxed Final Day in Lhasa: Exploring Norbulingka Palace

We had the last day at leisure as we extended our trip by a day because otherwise, we wouldn't have had a flight to Kathmandu. On this last day, we visited Norbulingka Palace on our own, which wasn't a problem.

In Lhasa, you can walk around freely as a tourist, but some sights can only be visited with a guide. Norbulingka Palace was the Dalai Lama's summer residence. Here too, you'll find beautifully decorated temples, a large park, and even a ZOO.

In the evening, we went to the large square in front of the Potala Palace. A huge fountain has been built there, where a water show is performed. The Potala Palace itself is beautifully illuminated at night. It's definitely worth walking around here in the evening.

Saying Goodbye to Tibet: Reflect on Our Journey Before Departure

On the day of our departure, Tibet Vista picked us up and took us to Lhasa airport.

The airport is also new, like most roads in Lhasa. There has been significant investment in infrastructure in recent years.

The funny thing about the airport was that the international airport only handled one flight a day. The domestic airport, on the other hand, was much busier.

To summarize, I rate Tibet Vista a solid 10:

  • They respond quickly and professionally.
  • The prices are reasonable.
  • The service is of good quality.
  • Questions were answered.
  • Appointments were kept.
  • The guide was knowledgeable.
  • A reliable company.

I can absolutely recommend Tibet Vista. I have no idea if I'll ever return to Tibet, but if I get the chance, I will use their services again.
