I’m a British tourist that spent 9 months in 2025 backpacking across the whole of East and Southeast Asia. At the time of booking my Tibet tour, I was in South Korea with China as my next destination only a few weeks later.
I found Tibet Vista through a simple Google search, as one of the more popular and highly rated Tibet local tour agencies.

How Easy It Was to Plan My Tibet Tour with Tibet Vista
Booking my Tibet tour with Tibet Vista was super simple!
I sent a quick email to their inquiries inbox and received a very fast response with the upcoming tour dates, prices, and packages. They also helped me book my sleeper train into Tibet, as the ticket sites were not accepting foreign ID’s.
Within the 48 hours after my initial inquiry, I had booked onto the next tour in 2 weeks, confirmed my train ticket, received my information package, and had the agency sorting out my Tibet Travel Permit!
My Tibet tour began with a train ride to Lhasa through stunning winter landscapes. My Unforgettable Tibet Train Journey from Chongqing to Lhasa
I chose the 4-day Lhasa city tour as I had limited time in China with a long list of places to visit.
I started with a Tibet train from Chongqing to Lhasa, which was an epic 36-hour voyage via the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. From my bunk, I watched us cross the open plains of the Tibetan plateau, glide past sapphire blue lakes reflecting the clear skies above, and cut between an endless parade of mountains.
The train crews were super friendly, and I had some fantastic food on the dining car – as well as local Lhasa beers from the highest altitude breweries in the world!
Being able to travel on the world’s highest railway was such a privilege. I’ll never forget when I briefly woke up at 1 am (about 6 hours before reaching Lhasa) when we had stopped at Tanggula Pass, the highest point of the line and the highest station in the world. While looking out the window, I could see more stars in the sky than I have ever witnessed in my life.

Arriving in Lhasa and Exploring the City before the Group Tour Start
I arrived early in Lhasa and was picked up by a very friendly driver arranged by the company, and taken straight to the hotel. I’d thoroughly recommend taking an early train/flight into Lhasa as it will give you extra time to acclimatize and a whole extra day to explore the city. After a quick nap I ventured out into the city.
My first stops were the Lalu Wetlands (to the north of the palace) and the Tibet Museum. The museum was a great insight into the history, politics, culture, and lifestyle of the Tibetan people. Definitely worth visiting. The wetlands were an amazing chance to get some photographs, as the lakes act as a gigantic mirror reflecting the palace and the mountain range behind it. Both of these places were very easy to get to via a quick Didi taxi and were free to enter.

The next day was the first proper day of the tour. I met my group in the hotel lobby in the morning, and we went straight to the Potala Palace. I’ve dreamed of visiting the place for years, and it was such a phenomenal experience. We made our way up through the building through an endless labyrinth of courtyards and shrines, got to see the Dalai Lama’s chambers and tombs of the previous Dalai Lamas.
We then visited the Old Town, had a fantastic lunch at a local restaurant with a variety of Tibetan dishes, and watched pilgrims worshipping outside the Jokhang Temple.
As my tour was during the winter period, we had the free addition of a craft workshop, where we tried traditional woodblock printing, learnt some calligraphy, and made our own incense!

The next day, we visited the Sera and Drepung monasteries on the outskirts of Lhasa to see what an active monastery is like. In addition to touring through the buildings, we were able to watch the Buddhist monks studying together in a great hall for their exams, as well as watch the monks debating at Sera Monastery in an outdoor courtyard.
We had some free time that afternoon, and our guide dropped us off at an authentic local market just outside the busy town centre.
That evening, we were treated to the family meal - another bonus from booking a winter tour, which involved a collection of Tibetan dishes.

Visiting Tibet in winter (late November) was a good choice.
The skies were incredibly clear, tourist crowds were much smaller, and we also received several winter travel bonuses, including a hotel upgrade, cultural workshops, and special meals.
The peaceful atmosphere made the experience feel even more authentic and enjoyable.
In winter, fewer crowds at Barkhor Street make visiting the holy Jokhang Temple and its surroundings more peaceful.Looking Back on My Small Group Tour in Lhasa with Tibet Vista
I really enjoyed my time in Lhasa as it was definitely a bucket list destination. The Tibetan culture was so rich and vibrant, absolutely filled with Buddhist monks, pilgrims, and people visiting Lhasa from other parts of the region.
The food in Lhasa was fantastic and it was a treat to see so many people wearing their traditional clothing as well.
Our Tibetan tour guide from Tibet Vista was really informative as she was a local with fantastic English and extensive knowledge of the religion, culture and history.
It was also very nice to have a small tour group of 8 people from a variety of countries. Looking back, I would definitely recommend taking an early fight/ train to Tibet and a later flight/train out if possible, as having more free time to explore the holy city at your own pace is well worth it.
I will absolutely be recommending the tour to my friends and family back home, and if I’d had more time I would have loved to visit Shigatse and cross the Himalayas as well.
Thank you for the experience!
