A Journey to the Roof of the World: An Unforgettable Experience with Tibet Vista

Written by Kenny from Japan 0 COMMENTS

From my student days, I have always been an avid traveler, not just exploring various countries as a backpacker, but also traversing the vast landscapes of China. My previous journeys have taken me to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Dalian, Shenyang, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Shangri-La. These extensive travels gradually nurtured a deep-seated desire to one day visit Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet.

Knowing that foreigners are only permitted to travel in Tibet through organized tours, I began an online search for a suitable tour operator. My aim was to gain as flat and authentic a view of the local life as possible, so I actively looked for a company that welcomed travelers from all corners of the globe, rather than one predominantly catering to people from my own country. After carefully reviewing testimonials, checking customer photos, and considering various options, I ultimately decided on Tibet Vista.

Navigating the Planning Phase and Pre-Trip Logistics

My feelings during the planning phase were a mix of excitement and a slight apprehension regarding the unique logistical challenges of traveling to Tibet, particularly obtaining the required travel permission (Tibet Travel Permit).

However, the team at Tibet Vista completely managed this complex requirement. Before even formally booking the tour, I made several inquiries, and the prompt, courteous, and detailed responses I received gave me immense confidence. I found the essays and photographs shared by past participants to be genuine and trustworthy, solidifying my choice.

For future travelers, I highly recommend booking well in advance, especially concerning the permit. You need to have the physical permit in hand before boarding your flight to Lhasa. In my case, Tibet Vista efficiently arranged to send the original permit document to my transit hotel in China ahead of time, ensuring I had no issues when checking in for the final flight. This seamless handling of the essential paperwork removed a major source of pre-trip stress.

The Six-Day Immersion: Lhasa and Shigatse

I signed up for the 6 Days Lhasa-Shigatse Small Group Tour. It was a truly international group, reflecting the company’s diverse clientele; our small but lively team consisted of travelers from Italy, Australia, Spain, Belgium, and Japan (myself included). This diverse composition greatly enhanced the experience, allowing for rich cultural exchange throughout the journey.

This itinerary allowed me to visit some of the most iconic and essential sites within Lhasa city, including the revered Jokhang Temple and the majestic Potala Palace.

The experience at Jokhang Temple was profoundly moving and remains etched in my memory. Surrounding the temple, I witnessed countless Tibetan pilgrims performing full-body prostrations - kora - a spectacle of unwavering faith that deeply impressed me. The sheer spiritual power and devotion on display there is something I believe I will never forget! It was a powerful, raw demonstration of Tibetan Buddhist belief.

Inside the Potala Palace, the ancient residence of the Dalai Lamas, the structure felt like an intricate, sacred maze. Our guide provided clear and thorough explanations, helping us delve into the complex history embedded in its walls. Beyond the daylight visit, I highly recommend seeing the Potala Palace at night; the evening illumination is absolutely breathtaking and transforms the already magnificent structure into something ethereal.

Our journey then took us to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and home to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Shigatse offered a distinctly more local and less tourist-centric atmosphere than Lhasa, allowing a deeper glimpse into everyday Tibetan life.

A separate highlight of the tour was the visit to Yamdrok Lake. The sheer clarity and stunning turquoise-blue color of the lake are simply indescribable; it’s an intense, natural beauty that must be witnessed in person to be fully appreciated. I urge anyone visiting the region to make the trip—words and pictures do not do it justice.

Encountering the Challenges: Altitude Sickness and Guide Support

One of the inevitable challenges of traveling in Tibet is the high altitude. I had taken preventative medication for altitude sickness starting the day before my arrival. Despite this precaution, I began to feel the common symptoms shortly after landing.

I immediately contacted our guide, Kunchok, via WeChat to ask for advice. He responded instantly, telling me exactly which anti-altitude sickness medication was available at the local pharmacy. While the pre-emptive Japanese medication helped, I suspect my symptoms were exacerbated by insufficient sleep during my transit day. For this reason, I strongly advise travelers to meticulously plan their transit to ensure they get adequate rest before arriving in Lhasa.

Kunchok proved to be an exemplary guide. He is clearly a seasoned veteran in the guiding profession and was exceptionally professional and attentive. He kept a watchful eye on the entire group, effortlessly managing diverse needs and personalities, while consistently offering precise and insightful advice about the local customs, sites, and acclimatization. His quick, practical support regarding the altitude issue was invaluable.

Coming from a Japanese cultural background, where the practice of tipping can often feel awkward or unfamiliar, I found it difficult to offer a monetary gratuity. Instead, as a sincere gesture of thanks for his superb service, I presented Kunchok with a small token of Japanese culture: a box of Castella cake and some fine Matcha green tea. It felt like a more personal and respectful way to show my deep appreciation for his guidance.

Comfort and Culinary Exploration

The Tibet accommodation throughout the tour contributed to the ease of traveling in Tibet: a comfortable three-star hotel that provided reliable hot showers. The hotel premises were well-equipped, featuring a restaurant, a cafe, and a small convenience store, and several local eateries were also within easy walking distance.

While access to monasteries and temples is restricted to the organized tour schedule, the freedom to explore local restaurants during personal downtime was a real bonus. I strongly recommend taking this opportunity to venture out and try authentic Tibetan cuisine. During one of my free evenings, I discovered local Tibetan wine! It was surprisingly smooth, incredibly flavorful, and quite delicious. Having heard that the quality of Chinese wines, in general, has been steadily improving over the years, I was thrilled with this find—it was truly satisfying and added a unique flavor to the trip.

A Note for Improvement: The Welcome Dinner

If there is one aspect of the tour that I believe could be improved, it would be the choice of cuisine for the welcome dinner. I felt that some of the European travelers in our group were slightly disappointed, with a few commenting that they were hoping for more local flavors. Providing an authentic Tibetan hot pot or a similar local specialty would significantly elevate the overall dining experience and increase satisfaction levels across the board.

Advice to Future Travelers and Considering a Return

For those planning a journey to Tibet, my primary advice is to prioritize rest and altitude preparation. While preventative medication is helpful, ensure your itinerary allows for sufficient sleep, especially during transit, to maximize your body’s ability to acclimatize. Furthermore, I highly recommend choosing a tour company like Tibet Vista due to their excellent customer service, promptness, and high level of support, particularly with critical issues like obtaining the required permits and dealing with unexpected health concerns.

Due to the constraints of my schedule this time, I was only able to explore Lhasa and Shigatse. However, I am already looking ahead and planning a future trip to the region, specifically contemplating the incredible challenge and spiritual journey to Mount Kailash.

When that time comes, I fully intend to use Tibet Vista again. The quality of the guide, the smooth logistics, and the overall positive experience have left me eagerly anticipating the opportunity to set foot on the sacred soil of Lhasa once more.
