I traveled with Tibet Vista on the classic 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu tour a couple of months ago, and I have to say the experience was unbeatable. From the moment you land, their staff picks you up and takes you to your hotel. They are lovely and willing to help you with anything you need.
Before arriving, I had to pick up my Tibet Travel Permit, which wasn't a problem at all. I provided them with the information they requested, and they took care of everything. I only had to collect it from the reception desk of a hotel at Chengdu Airport, through which I was flying to Lhasa.

Arrival in Lhasa: Easy Exploration, High-Altitude Adjustment, and Feeling Completely Safe
I was lucky enough to arrive in Lhasa the day before the tour started, which allowed me to enjoy some free time before the planned activities began. I used this time to visit the Tibetan Museum and the sacred Nanshan Mountain. I do recommend taking it easy, though, as it's important to acclimatize well to the altitude.
This mountain rises to 4,070 meters, although the city itself is at about 3,650 meters, so it's not a particularly demanding climb. Even so, I tried to ascend slowly and had plenty of water, some snacks, and sun protection.
As for the dreaded altitude sickness, I didn't experience any symptoms, although one of my companions was affected. Luckily, the staff at Tibet Vista were very attentive to his condition and provided him with everything he needed, such as medication and oxygen bottles, so he was able to recover and enjoy the experience.
I was able to explore the city without any problems. The locals are incredibly welcoming, and the language barrier wasn't an issue, as I always managed to make myself understood, even with the help of a translator. Furthermore, I never felt unsafe, not even at night when I ventured out to find somewhere to eat.

The days in Lhasa were incredible. It has a unique atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Buddhist spirituality permeates everything, and it was fascinating to explore its temples and palaces surrounded by pilgrims and locals who came to pray and offer gifts. Furthermore, our local Tibetan guide was a great storyteller, and it was a real pleasure to listen to all the stories he told us about local history, art, and culture.
For me, the Potala Palace deserves special mention. It's a beautiful place, overlooking the city from its heights and visible from many vantage points. It exudes a magical aura.
Almost everyone in my tour group was traveling alone, just like me, except for a couple of friends. From the start, there was a great atmosphere and the conversation flowed easily, even though we were from different countries. It was a wonderful experience to share a week with such a diverse group.

From Breakfast Buffets to Incense Making: The Little Moments I’ll Never Forget
Another aspect I thoroughly enjoyed was the Tibetan food and other cuisines. I ate very well throughout my stay, even in the most remote areas far from the major cities.
Vegetarian and vegan options are usually easy to find, and while many typical dishes are spicy, you can also find milder options if you're not a big fan of hot sauce... I certainly am, so I loved everything! Special mention goes to the breakfast buffet at the Lhasa hotel; it was so varied, and everything was delicious. I really miss it!
One of the things that surprised me was the afternoon we spent doing some workshops at Tibet Vista. It was so interesting to get our hands dirty making our own incense, printing designs on traditional fabrics, and trying to learn to write in ancient Tibetan script. It wasn't just a lovely experience, but all those things became very special memories. I even used some of them to make a nice gift for my parents!

After our enjoyable experience in Lhasa, it was time for a change of scenery and to hit the road for Everest Base Camp, which was the biggest highlight of this journey.
The first thing that surprised me about this new stage was the comfort of our travels. Our van was a real luxury, with individual reclining seats and built-in heaters, very warm yak blankets that we could also use when we got out of the vehicle, and plenty of space for both us and our luggage. We also had plenty of water and oxygen bottles in case we experienced altitude sickness.
Aside from the vehicle itself, our entire journey was very comfortable, thanks to both our experienced driver and the excellent road conditions. Contrary to what I had imagined, Tibet's infrastructure was superb throughout our trip, and I never felt unsafe in any way.

Once we left the capital city, Lhasa, nature gradually began to take center stage on our journey. Vast valleys of the Tibetan Plateau, crisscrossed by sacred Tibetan lakes and surrounded by ever-higher mountains, gave way to mountain passes with breathtaking views.
One of the first viewpoints offered magnificent vistas of Lake Yamdrok. Unfortunately, despite it being winter, the lake wasn't frozen, as it had been until recently, due to the ravages of climate change. Even so, we could see ice on its shore, as well as some of the most characteristic animals of this region, such as goats, Tibetan mastiffs, and the formidable Tibetan yaks.

A Warm Local Encounter in Tibet and a Peaceful Stop in Shigatse Before Tashilhunpo Monastery
But this part of the trip isn't all about nature. Along the way, we were able to visit the home of some locals, see a makeshift Buddhist temple, and sample some typical dishes in a warm, family atmosphere where we felt truly welcomed.
Our last urban stop was in Shigatse, a very quiet city but with all the amenities, where we were able to rest and visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery before venturing into the more rural part of Tibet.

From Shigatse, we followed a succession of viewpoints in mountain passes, each one higher than the last, from which we could gradually observe, ever closer, what for me was the highlight of the trip: the majestic Himalayas.
The sight of their snow-capped peaks is breathtaking even from afar, and that feeling only intensifies as you approach them. I still remember the thrill I felt the first time I saw the unmistakable silhouette of the roof of the world, Mount Everest.
For me, a passionate mountaineer who read a book throughout the trip about the first expeditions to Everest, it was an incredible experience to retrace the steps of those adventurers, seeing the same villages and crossing the same passes they traversed. And, without a doubt, the highlight came at Rongbuk Monastery, at the foot of the glacier of the same name, just a few meters from Everest Base Camp.
The view of the world's highest mountain from this vantage point is breathtaking. The spectacular surroundings and Buddhist temples imbue the entire place with a mystical and indescribable atmosphere. Sipping hot tea here, surrounded by monks, was an unforgettable experience.
And this was just a taste of what awaited us a little further on, at the Everest Base Camp, where we watched the mountain change color, from the white of its snows to the reddish hues of the setting sun, in what was the most beautiful sunset I have ever witnessed.

Crossing Gyirong into Nepal: Saying Goodbye to the Sacred Tibetan Plateau
After this emotional rollercoaster, it was time to resume our journey to Nepal, our final destination.
We still had to cross beautiful snow-covered Gyirong valleys and increasingly verdant gorges before reaching the Gyirong Port, the China-Nepal border. Once there, our guide accompanied us through all the customs formalities.
After crossing into Nepal, our new local Nepali guide welcomed us and helped us with all the necessary procedures, such as security checks, visas, and currency exchange. She then guided us to the vehicle that would take us to our hotel in Kathmandu, where the entire team enjoyed one last evening to say goodbye and reminisce about the wonderful moments we had shared.

Looking back on my 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu overland journey, what stays with me most is not just the landscapes or sacred monasteries, but the feeling of how naturally everything unfolded.
From the sacred rhythm of Lhasa, across the open silence of the Tibetan Plateau, to the ever-growing presence of the Himalayas as we approached Everest Base Camp, every day felt like a gradual unfolding of something both vast and deeply personal.
What made this journey truly special, though, was the sense of ease throughout. Tibet is often imagined as remote and challenging, but with Tibet Vista, everything felt well-prepared and surprisingly comfortable.
The logistics, from the Tibet Travel Permit process to airport pickup, hotel coordination, and border crossing support, were handled smoothly and professionally. Our guide and driver were consistently attentive, not just to the itinerary, but also to our well-being at high altitude, which made a real difference in how confidently I could enjoy each place without worry.
In the end, I don’t just remember the places. I remember the feeling of being taken care of while still feeling free to explore, connect, and absorb everything at my own pace. Tibet Vista didn’t just organize a tour; they created a journey that felt safe, human, and deeply memorable from start to finish.
