The itinerary we chose was the classic and iconic route from Lhasa toward Everest Base Camp and the Nepal border. It included places we had dreamed of for years: Lhasa and its monasteries, Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse, Rongbuk Monastery, Everest Base Camp, and the vast open landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau.
Unfortunately, because of unexpected problems at the Nepalese border, we couldn’t follow the original plan for the last two days. Instead of continuing south, we had to turn back and ride toward Namtso Lake and then return to Lhasa.
Even though this could have been frustrating, it was handled incredibly well. Our guide and the agency reorganized everything at the very last minute, finding a great alternative without stress or confusion. The way they managed this sudden change showed us how experienced and reliable they really are. We never felt abandoned or unsure about what was happening — quite the opposite.

Traveling with an Outstanding Tibetan Guide
One of the highlights of the entire trip was without any doubt our guide, Tenzin. He was amazing. Tenzin was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Tibetan culture, history, and religion, and he explained everything in a way that was easy to understand but still deep and meaningful. Every monastery and temple we visited came alive thanks to his explanations.
Beyond that, he helped us with every single difficulty we encountered along the way. Whether it was dealing with fatigue, altitude, small problems with the bikes, or daily logistics, he was always calm, present, and supportive. Traveling with him felt safe and reassuring, even in challenging situations.

And challenges, of course, there were many. We faced difficult weather conditions, including rain and even snow. Some roads were in bad shape, with mud, broken asphalt, and rough sections that required full concentration.
The altitude of Tibet was probably the toughest challenge of all. Riding a motorcycle at over 5,000 meters is physically exhausting, and even simple maneuvers become hard. You feel the lack of oxygen all the time, and every day pushes your limits a bit further.

However, every struggle was completely worth it. The landscapes were beyond anything we had imagined: endless horizons, snow-covered mountains, turquoise lakes, and an overwhelming sense of space and silence.
Visiting temples and monasteries in Tibet was deeply moving, and riding through these places gave us a powerful feeling of being somewhere truly unique. Many times, we felt like we were riding on the roof of the world, far away from everything else.

We traveled in mid-September, which is generally a good time to visit Tibet, but mountain weather is unpredictable. If we ever return — and we truly hope we will — we would probably choose a time with even more stable weather conditions. Still, those unpredictable moments also became part of the adventure and made the experience more real and intense.

Looking back, this Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake Motorcycle trip was much more than just a motorcycle tour. It was a life experience, full of challenges, emotions, and unforgettable moments. Tibet Vista played a fundamental role in making everything work smoothly, from planning to execution.
Our main advice for future travelers is simple: trust your guide completely. Things don’t always go as planned in Tibet, and that’s exactly why having experienced people by your side makes all the difference. With Tibet Vista and our guide, we always felt supported, informed, and safe.
