Through Peaks and Valleys: My 7-Day Journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu with Tibet Vista

Hi, my name is Tiziano from Italy and I would like to share with you my experience of my 7 days Lhasa to Kathmandu trip.

I heard about Tibet vista on internet, I read really good reviews and the trip itineraries were very detailed and full of information. I started to have long e-mail conversation with Liam, he is really kind, answering all my questions quickly and being really helpful. So I decided to book.

I had my trip in August 2024, and even though that shouldn’t be the most pleasant season to visit Tibet, as mentioned on the website too, because of the rain season, we were lucky about the weather, it happened sometimes some small storm, but they didn’t last long. Temperature was great, never too hot and never too cold.

By the way, if seeing the 8000 mt peaks is your main priority, I would say to consider better months for the trip. When we were at the right spots to see high peaks they were always covered by clouds, but I still can’t complain since I had the chance to admire the amazing Mt.Everest during the night at the base camp.

Seamless Travel to Lhasa: A Scenic Train Journey and Hassle-Free Permits with Tibet Vista

I got to Lhasa from Xining by train, and it was a great experience that I recommend. Amazing landscapes and really comfortable cars ( I was in the soft sleeper one). Tibet vista managed everything about it so I didn’t have to stress to find the train ticket that it’s not easy at all for foreigners.

They took care of everything concerning the Tibet travel permit as well ( when I traveled to Tibet Italian citizens, and other ones too didn’t need any visa if the stay in China was less than 15 days) but to go to Tibet a special permit is still needed and Tibet vista managed it.

When I arrived to Lhasa train station a driver was waiting for me, he took me to the hotel, in the really city center, where I had time to rest, get used to altitude and take a look at the city. The real tour with the guide started the next day.

From Tibet to Nepal: A Journey of Friendship, Expert Guidance, and Smooth Cross-Border Travel

The group was composed by 10 people from all over the world, it was easy and fast becoming friends with all of them. Our tour guide Tenzin was nice and helpful, speaking great English and well informed about Tibetan history and traditions.

The driver was great too, driving fast as much as needed and safely. The bus was comfortable, with enough space for our luggage and with free sits too. At the border we said hello to our guide and the driver. Some Tibet vista employees were waiting for us at the other side, they helped us to have the Nepalese visa and they provided us the jeep ride.

My Tibet JourneyThe road from the border to Kathmandu is in really bad conditions, almost completely on a dirt road.

Preparing for the Unexpected: Weather Delays and Comfortable Stays on the Journey to Kathmandu

I would recommend to plan an extra day in Kathmandu to avoid missing flights because as they said, landslides and floods are pretty common, especially in the rain season. We had to face it and we got to Kathmandu one and an half day late.

Hotel in LhasaThis is our hotel were we slept 3 nights in Lhasa.

The hotel in Tibet where we slept were pretty good, we always had private bathroom in room ( except at the BEC as mentioned in the itinerary, but the place where we slept was way better than my expectation).

Hotel in ShigatseThe 4th night we slept in Shigatse I was pretty lucky because I had an amazing suite.

The 5th night we were at the EBC, amazing experience. We slept in these containers. There were tents too that I didn’t see inside. There are 5 beds in every container , with clean bed sheets and enough blankets. There was a small electric heater that helped during the night.

Mt.EverestSeeing Mt.Everest is one of the highlights in this marvelous trip.

The 6th night we slept at Gyirong, close to the border. In my opinion this hotel wasn’t as good as previous ones, but the location was nice, in the town centre so we had the chance to visit it and find a nice restaurant.

That night, a river in flood destroyed a part of the only road leading to the border. We had to spend one and a half extra day in Gyirong. We spent the night in a new hotel, a really nice one, Tibet vista managed and paid for it.

Dining in Tibet: Local Flavors, Cultural Differences, and Guidance on Where to Eat

Before giving an opinion about the food, it’s needed to consider the place where you are, except Lhasa that is a big city, the rest of the tour is in small towns at high altitude, habits about cooking and sanitary rules are way different from western ones so you can’t expect the same treatment that in a big western city.

Breakfast was always included, with local food and some products of the typical continental breakfast. About lunch and dinner, few of them were included so we had it according to the schedule, for the most of them we were free to go wherever we wanted, paying for it, but the guide always helped us to find nice places not expensive at all.

Karola GlacierThe Karola glacier offers breathtaking views and a unique natural wonder for adventurers.

So, at the end of trip, my opinion is definitely positive about everything, I recommend Tibet vista and I recommend to visit this amazing land, even though many things have been changed during the years, you can still breath the magical Tibetan atmosphere.
