Planning and the Booking Experience
Signing up with Tibet Vista felt reassuring because they handled the logistics that could otherwise feel overwhelming: the Tibet Travel Permit, transportation, accommodation, guides, and most tourist site tickets.
Their itinerary promised immersion in both cultural heritage and nature’s dramatic beauty — from Lhasa’s spiritual heart to the windswept plains below Mt. Everest. I booked my preferred dates two months ahead to secure the best rate and guarantee a spot for a private tour for myself and my partner.
In the planning phase, there were moments of doubt: How would my body handle the altitude? Would I get sick?
I prepared by researching altitude sickness in Tibet, hydrating constantly, and including rest days. I also spent time learning about Tibetan culture and religion so I could show respect when visiting sacred sites.
Luckily, my consultant, Holly, was able to answer all my questions. The anticipation built with every email exchange with her — and when my final documents arrived, I felt a thrill that this dream was finally coming true.

Arriving in Lhasa — perched at nearly 3,650 meters above sea level — was surreal. My guide greeted me with a traditional hada scarf, a warm gesture that set the tone for the entire trip.
That first day was mostly about resting and acclimatizing, though even the views from the hotel balcony — mountains kissing the horizon — were breathtaking.
Over the next two days, we explored iconic sights of Lhasa, like the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, and wandered through Barkhor Street, where Tibetan pilgrims performed. The wisdom and calm I felt in the temples, and the rhythmic chants from monks in their saffron robes, grounded me in the physical and spiritual heartbeat of Tibet.
What struck me most was the kindness of the local people. At a lovely tea house at Barkhor Street, tasting sweet yak tea, my guide gently explained Tibetan social customs — a moment of understanding that no guidebook could have captured.

Day 4–6 of My Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Tour: Overland to the Himalayas
Leaving Lhasa, we traveled overland from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp through changing landscapes: winding mountain passes, shimmering lakes, and vistas that seemed too vast to be real. We stopped along Yamdrok Lake, its turquoise waters mirroring the sky, and were even welcomed to lunch at a local Tibetan family’s home — a beautiful detour that deepened my appreciation for everyday life on the Plateau.
The journey to Shigatse, and onward through Tingri, brought us ever closer to the Himalayas. Each bend in the road felt like a new revelation. Even though the altitude was making its presence felt, and the winding roads made me feel dizzy, the scenery at every point was breath-taking and took out most of our fatigue.
Then came the moment I’d dreamt of: arriving at Everest Base Camp (EBC). The northern face of Everest loomed, its snowy peak radiant against the sky. At sunset, the mountain glowed rose and gold. Even though we were about 30 km from the mountain, it felt like I could reach out and touch the mountain. It was truly magical.
It was a fun and unique experience taking a photo with a Tibetan mastiff on the way to Yamdrok Lake.

On the return journey, we visited Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse — home to the massive Maitreya Buddha statue — and then back along the winding roads to Lhasa.
Shopping on Barkhor Street for souvenirs, I reflected on how much I had absorbed — not just sites and photos, but the rhythms of Tibetan life.
On the final day, my guide once again saw me off at the airport, offering blessings for safe travels. As I boarded my Tibet train away from the high plateau, I felt lighter and fuller at once — enriched by places, people, and a landscape that taught humility and gratitude.

What left the deepest impression wasn’t just the peaks or temples — but the sense of stillness and reverence woven into every aspect of life here. Whether it was monks chanting at dawn, nomads tending flocks, or pilgrims prostrating in prayer, Tibet is defined by devotion — to land, spirit, and community.
Altitude was the biggest challenge for many of us. Even well-prepared travellers felt its effects. But with patience, hydration, and rest, it was manageable. I’m forever glad I didn’t rush, and I’d advise future travellers to respect the pace this place demands.

- Plan in advance, Tibet Travel Permit takes about 2 weeks to be approved.
- Acclimatize, hydrate, and listen to your body.
- Learn about local customs — respect is appreciated and opens doors.
- Pack warm layers (temperature swings are real).
- Book with a reputable local operator, not just for logistics but for deeper cultural insights.
All in all, it was a hassle-free trip to Tibet. For my next trip with Tibet Vista, I would perhaps extend the route toward Mt Kailash or even a deeper expedition to Kathmandu. Maybe it is time to email Ms Holly to ask for her expert Tibet advice again.
