I had long been curious about traveling to Tibet, and this journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa finally gave me the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
From crossing the Nepal-Tibet border to visiting Mount Everest Base Camp and exploring the cultural heart of Lhasa, the trip offered a rich mix of landscapes, history, and unique moments.
I found Tibet Vista through a Google search for “Tibet from Kathmandu tours,” and the entire booking process went very smoothly. Our travel consultant, Holly, was courteous, professional, and highly efficient throughout.
Overall, the tour was excellent and offered outstanding value for money.
Kathmandu to the Border & Crossing Experience
The journey from Kathmandu to the border was overall smooth, and our driver Lhakpa was excellent, a very skilled driver, always polite and helpful throughout the trip.
The hotel in Tatopani is set in a beautiful location and has great potential, though the management and service could be improved. There were a few minor inconveniences during the stay, but nothing that significantly affected the overall experience.
At the border, the transfer process was generally manageable, though there was a brief period of uncertainty upon arrival as the local representative was slightly delayed due to unforeseen circumstances with another traveler in the group. This led to a short wait at the crossing point, but the situation was handled on-site and did not cause major disruption.
On a positive note, the Gyirong border crossing itself was smooth. After entering China, the process was efficient and well-organized, with courteous staff making the transition quick and straightforward.

Well-Organized Journey Across Tibet with Stunning Scenery
All the travelling around Tibet was very well organized. The vehicle was clean, tidy, and comfortable. The road conditions in Tibet are astonishingly good for such a difficult terrain.
Our guide, Pemba, and our driver were both excellent at looking after all group members’ needs and balancing sometimes conflicting requests. All pick-ups were on time and well organized.
I booked my hotel independently in Shigatse and Lhasa. The Qomo Langzong Hotel in Shigatse, recommended by Tibet Vista, was an excellent choice. The hotels in Nyalam and Tingri were both very pleasant, clean, comfortable, and modern.
The views on the journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa were truly astonishing and an unforgettable experience. Our guide, Pemba, made sure we had enough stops at the most beautiful places to enjoy the beautiful views and the fresh, crisp air.
I took Diamox as a precaution and did not experience any altitude sickness during the trip.
Gyirong town at the border is livelier than I expected.A Great Itinerary with Opportunities for an Even Better Pace
The overall itinerary was thoughtfully arranged and covered many of Tibet’s highlights. If possible, I would have appreciated an extra night in Shigatse, even if it meant slightly reducing the time in Lhasa.
Some parts of the journey felt a bit fast-paced, especially after the long day visiting Mount Everest Base Camp in Tibet. We arrived in Shigatse later in the day and departed early the next morning, which left limited time to explore the city and its surroundings.
That said, the itinerary successfully included many key destinations in Tibet, and with a small adjustment to the pacing, it could offer an even more relaxed and immersive experience.
Enjoy the glorious view of Mount Everest on the way.An Unforgettable Experience at Mount Everest North Base Camp
This was for me a truly memorable experience. Getting to the Everest Base Camp in Tibet by tour bus, and then the official eco-bus for the final stretch, was remarkably easy.
Despite it being already mid-October, the temperature at Everest Base Camp when we got there mid-afternoon was pleasant and not too cold. The view is unforgettable, as also the visit to nearby Rongbuk Monastery.
Visit Rongbuk Monastery and take in the breathtaking views of Mount Everest.Exploring Lhasa and Its Iconic Landmarks
The visit to Potala Palace is a truly memorable experience- interesting history, beautiful buildings, and stunning views. It is a truly unique place that no one can forget. Our guide, Pemba, was excellent at managing the rather complex time slot logistics for access to the palace.
In Lhasa, the pace of the itinerary was more relaxed, allowing us to spend meaningful time at each site. Personally, I felt that slightly adjusting the time spent at Norbulingka and Sera Monastery could create an even better balance with the earlier part of the journey, which was more fast-paced.
An unforgettable visit to the Potala Palace in Lhasa.Would I consider returning to Tibet?
I might again make an exception for Tibet, for example, for the Mount Kailash from Kathmandu trip.
If budget allows, I would prefer a private tour over a group tour, as it offers greater flexibility and more freedom to explore at my own pace.
