Looking online “how to tour Tibet”, we emailed 3 tour provider companies and only Tibet Vista replied!! We are in our 70s and wanted to deal with a reliable, caring company. We struck gold with Tibet Vista. We chose the 8-day Kathmandu to Lhasa overland tour, from April 29 to May 6, 2025.
Starting Our Nepal Tibet Tour with Excellent Communication from Tibet Vista
Tibet Vista turned out to be an expert in communication. We had continuity in dealing with only one consultant – our lovely contact person was Gigi, who patiently answered all our questions.
Prior to travelling, we were sent detailed daily itineraries and payment options. We were able to choose the hotel grade we preferred. We must mention that we chose the cheapest option (3-star) and cannot speak highly enough of the hotel, particularly for its location, food, and high-quality accommodation provided by Tibet Vista.
Thanks to Gigi and everyone at Tibet Vista who made our dream tour to Tibet come true.
Smooth Border Crossing from Nepal to Tibet (China) via Gyirong Port
We were picked up from our hotel in Kathmandu and off we went in a 4WD traveling for 8 hours over the “world's worst roads” to the village of Rasuwa Gadhi near the border. Look around you at this village and notice the hundreds of new cars that have come from Tibet and are deteriorating while they await drivers prepared to take them over the grueling roads to Nepal. We gave big Kudos to our driver for keeping us safe.
Make sure you have NO photos, videos, information, or souvenirs relating to Buddhism with you, as you may face a hefty fine or you may be refused entry to Tibet from Nepal. This crossing can take hours for the tour group to pass through.

Enjoying a safe journey in Tibet with our excellent Tibetan guide and driver from Tibet Vista
As we passed through the border, we met our guide, Konchok. He had excellent knowledge of our route. What attractions to look out for - like the old chain bridge over the Trisuli River and the traditional field plowing using a Yak and tiller.
He kept an eye on weather conditions and, most importantly, he was in tune with the health, well-being, and oxygen requirements of each traveler.
Altitude sickness in Tibet affects each person differently, and whether you are young or old, fit or not so fit, you may need breathing assistance. Oxygen was needed by several of our group, and there were plenty of bottles available.
The roads in Tibet were a breeze to travel on, and we marveled at the engineering feats as we navigated the 100’s of switchback roads descending and ascending throughout the mountainous areas. Driver extraordinaire!!
The thrilling switchbacks of the G318 National Highway lead to Everest Base Camp in Tibet.
Experience the Highlighted Journey to Everest Base Camp in Tibet
Getting to Everest Base Camp on the Eco Bus and seeing Everest in all its glory in pristine whiteness was amazing and a highlight for us. We had previously seen the mountain from the Nepal side, but the views of Mt.Everest from the Tibet side sure take some beating.
The next day, trying to top those views, we stopped at the Gawula viewpoint, and there before us was the Himalaya lineup of some of the world’s highest mountains, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Chu Oyu, and of course, Everest. Kunchok always allowed plenty of time to take photos and to absorb the atmosphere. We were never rushed.

Continuing eastward, We Explored the Roof of the World in Greater Depth
And on we traveled. Tree planting in Tibet is ongoing, with millions of trees at varying stages of growth covering acre upon acre of land. Pristine clean rivers, like the Lhasa River, sacred lakes, and beautiful National Nature reserves. Everywhere is so clean and green. This is a region headed in the right direction.
The kindness and gentleness of the people made us feel happy and welcome. The Tibetans are humble Buddhists, and monasteries in Tibet are very important to them. Kunchok told us all about the statues inside each one and did so without making the stories sound too repetitive.
Each monastery, to the untrained eye, looked very similar to the one before, but learning the differences kept us interested. We got to see the Monks debating before the adjudicators to solve any of their perceived issues.
Stopping at the Lhasa River and enjoying the plateau river view on the way to Lhasa.
Witnessing unique monks debating in the monastery.
Ending our journey wonderfully in Lhasa
Lhasa, the provincial capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, lent itself to easy walking, and here we had free time in between the tour-organized activities.
There were lots of markets and shops, and interesting traditional architecture to enjoy. And, of course, best of all was the Potala Palace, which is a UNESCO Heritage site.
There are so many steps to climb, but each and every step is worth the effort to take in so much tradition and culture. Be sure to go back to the Palace Plaza at dusk/nightfall to enjoy the stunning night views of the Potala Palace, when the palace is superbly lit. Moreover, you can enjoy the colorful musical fountains.

We were lucky enough to share a Tibetan lunch with a family in their own home. We also enjoyed a steamboat meal with dancing entertainment.
The farewell dinner at the hotel actually brought a tear to our eyes, as we said goodbye to our guide and driver and the group of 15 fellow travelers (a mix of ages – 20s up to 70s) who had become our friends during the 8-day Kathmandu to Lhasa tour.
An adventure from start to finish, thanks to Gigi and Kunchok. We must mention here that we also toured Bhutan with Tibet Vista. If you can, do that tour too. We loved it.
We also visited the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse.
The turquoise Yamdrok Lake on the way from Shigatse to Lhasa.
