Unforgettable Kailash Pilgrimage: From San Francisco to the Sacred Mount with Tibet Vista

Written by Praveena Jogi from United States 0 COMMENTS

When my husband, Ravi, and I decided this was the year we would finally visit Mount Kailash, there was an immediate clarity: we wanted to go from Chengdu. The journey itself felt like part of the spiritual challenge, and finding the right guide company was the critical first step.

Join our 15 days Lhasa to Mount Kailash tour to uncover the essence of Tibet, with 3 days kora.

Choosing the Right Guidance: Finding Grace from Tibet Vista

I immediately started searching Google for the best tourist companies specializing in Tibet tour I chatted with several, but Tibet Vista stood out instantly. My primary contact, Grace, was incredibly responsive and understood our specific needs for a private, customized tour.

The planning phase, which is often stressful for complex international travel, felt seamless because of her. She was instrumental in arranging every logistical detail we required. Even during the initial back-and-forth, my feelings were consistently calm and confident, we were in good hands. Grace didn't just coordinate; she delivered. She arranged the perfect guide, a safe driver, and a comfortable car four our Mount Kailash tour, they became our family for the next 16 days.

The Ease of Travel and the Small Miracles

We landed in Chengdu, China, and the seamless service started immediately. A staff member was patiently waiting for us at Chengdu airport, holding our essential Tibet travel Permit. This immediate care set the tone for the entire trip.

Our itinerary balanced acclimatization days with the awe-inspiring drive through the Tibetan plateau toward Kailash. Every day was memorable. We were constantly offered water and tea by our guide and driver, ensuring we stayed hydrated and healthy at every moment, a small detail that speaks volumes about their care.

There was a small challenge at the start: we were initially assigned a sports truck which, being only a 5-seater with fixed back windows, wasn't ideal for long journeys at high altitude. Our Tibetan guide was incredibly proactive and quickly helped us secure a more spacious and suitable vehicle, ensuring our comfort was prioritized immediately.

The Mountain of Miracles: Two Visions of Shiva

The physical journey on foot and horseback to the sacred mountain felt beyond description. Our eyes were truly "not enough to see" the sheer scale of the mountain valleys, the crystal-clear waterfalls, and the magnificent silence.

The true blessings began at the mountain itself. After hours of ascent, we reached a point to get our first view. The weather was cold, and Kailash was completely obscured by thick clouds, there was no visibility. It felt like the mountain was testing our faith.

But Lord Shiva showed His mercy. In an incredible, deeply personal moment of grace, the clouds shifted just enough, and the mountain revealed itself not as a peak, but in His Rupam (form), appearing like the sacred three lines (Trishula Tilakam) on His forehead. We were instantly blessed, and I was so overwhelmed with emotion, I was able to show this vishesh (special sight) to everyone with us. -Click here to know more about Mount Kailash Shiva Face

Later, as we reached the top, the weather grew colder, and the clouds once again completely covered the mountain, making it impossible to see. Just when disappointment could have set in, the gods granted us another sign: the clouds cleared only around the bottom part of the mountain for a few minutes. We saw the black mountain, dark and powerful, truly resembling Shiva's forehead. For those few moments, we forgot the rest of the world.

The next morning brought the third, distinct miracle: Shiva-Parvati gave another Darshan. The peak was topped with snow, resembling a white talapakam (turban). Even in the rainy season, when visibility is challenging from miles away, this perfect vision was granted.

The Final Blessing

As we were finally returning, miles and miles away from the peak, we looked back, and there was Kailash, perfectly visible! It confirmed my deepest belief: God is always with us. In that moment, I knew that Shiva-Parvati were accompanying us on our return journey.

My final thought is a profound "Thousands of Thank Yous and Dhandalūs (bows)" to the Divine for this journey.

My Advice to Future Travelers

To anyone planning this pilgrimage, my advice is two-fold:

Trust Your Tour Operator: Choose a company like Tibet Vista and a guide like Grace who are professional, proactive, and who treat you like family. Their ability to handle logistical challenges (like the permit and the car change) instantly eases your spiritual mind.

Be Open to Miracles: Don't focus on the physical difficulties. Focus on the intention. The journey is truly from nothing to everything. Expect to be challenged by the elements, but know that divine grace will manifest in ways you least expect, whether through a tiny window in the clouds or the perfect white snow.

A Note for Ladies: Please pack adequate supplies for your monthly cycle. High altitude can significantly affect your body and menstrual regularity, so be prepared for any changes.

The ease of traveling in Tibet, even with its remoteness, was largely due to the meticulous planning by Tibet Vista. I absolutely would, and hope to, consider returning. This journey was a true testament to faith and the power of committed travel partners.
