I never expected Tibet to become one of the most unforgettable trips of my life. The idea came suddenly - almost impulsively. One day, I had a sudden urge to see Mount Everest. Something inside me shifted immediately. I knew I had to see it with my own eyes.
At first, I looked into visiting Everest from the Nepal side. But it was low season, and the hiking routes were unavailable through my regular tour company. My travel agent strongly advised against attempting anything too adventurous because I had no hiking or altitude training. For a moment, I thought the dream would end there.
Then I discovered another possibility: visiting Everest from the Tibet side. That single decision turned into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

My First Surprise in Tibet: A Modern Land Beyond My Expectations
From the very beginning, the journey felt surprisingly seamless. Every question I had - from what to pack for the cold weather to whether I could feed stray dogs along the way - was answered patiently by the tour company. They arranged the Tibet Travel Permit efficiently, and once I arrived, everything was taken care of.
I was picked up directly from the airport and next day at my hotel and greeted warmly by both the driver and our Tibetan tour guide, who stayed with us throughout the trip. The private transportation made the experience comfortable, especially considering the long distances between destinations.

In my mind, I expected remote villages and rugged roads. Instead, I saw smooth highways stretching across dramatic landscapes, modern infrastructure, clean cities, and even renewable energy projects scattered across the mountains.
At one point during the drive, I noticed rows of solar panels and giant windmills mounted high among the mountains. It felt surreal seeing ancient Tibetan culture coexist so naturally with advanced technology.
Another thing that deeply moved me was learning how communities rebuilt after devastating earthquakes. Entire neighborhoods that had once been destroyed were reconstructed with new housing and improved facilities. The resilience of the people was inspiring.

What made Tibet tour truly unforgettable was not only the scenery, but the people and their philosophy of life.
Throughout the trip, my guide explained Tibetan Buddhist beliefs, rituals, and daily practices. Before visiting, I knew very little about Tibetan spirituality. But hearing the stories behind prayer wheels, monasteries, and prayer flags gave me a much deeper understanding of the culture.
The Tibetan people carried a sense of kindness that was difficult to describe. Whether it was local shop owners, elderly women walking through temples, or nomadic families along the roadside, everyone seemed deeply connected to their environment, their animals, and one another.

One memorable moment was watching how local people cared for their yaks goats, and dogs. Animals were not treated simply as livestock. There was genuine care and respect in the way they interacted with them.
I especially loved seeing stray dogs being fed and looked after in small towns. As someone who loves animals, that left a lasting impression on me.
Another highlight was dressing up in traditional Tibetan outfits for glamour photos. The photos turned out beautifully. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for Tibetan craftsmanship and traditional clothing design.

Nothing, however, compared to the moment we finally reached Everest Base Camp. The journey there was breathtaking.
I had prepared carefully to avoid altitude sickness in Tibet by taking Diamox and upgrading the hotels throughout the trip to 5-star accommodations whenever possible. Thankfully, I adapted surprisingly well to both the cold weather and the high altitude.
In fact, one of the biggest surprises was how manageable the experience felt. I had expected exhaustion, headaches, or discomfort. Instead, I felt energized almost the entire time. The most unforgettable moment came at sunset. We waited quietly at Everest Base Camp as the sky slowly transformed.
And ironically, while standing at one of the most remote places on Earth, we had perfect 5G connection. That contrast made me laugh. I even managed a face-time call with my partner back in Australia to share the moment.
Ancient mountains, prayer flags dancing in the wind, and flawless internet connection all existing together in the same moment. It perfectly summed up Tibet itself: deeply traditional yet unexpectedly modern.

Sometimes, the smallest moments became the most meaningful. One evening, I wandered through the Lhasa’s ancient street near my hotel and bought street food from a local stall. The air smelled of grilled meat, spices, and fresh bread. Locals chatted loudly while tourists wandered between shops glowing with warm yellow lights.
It felt lively, welcoming, and completely different from the quiet mountain landscapes we had spent days exploring. Another unforgettable experience was raising prayer flags at over 4,300 meters above sea level.
Standing there surrounded by endless mountains and colourful flags fluttering against the sky, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
I also realized how much tourism contributes to local livelihoods. Buying handmade goods, staying in local hotels, eating at small restaurants and enjoying responsible Tibet tour all helped support communities living in these remote regions.
That made the experience feel even more meaningful.

Looking back now, Tibet exceeded every expectation I had. What started as a spontaneous desire to see Everest became something much bigger - a journey that changed how I viewed culture, spirituality, nature, and even modern development.
There were no major challenges during the trip. Careful preparation, comfortable hotels in Tibet, and proper altitude medication made everything smooth and enjoyable.
If anything, the trip taught me that sometimes the places we fear might be difficult or inaccessible end up becoming the most rewarding experiences of our lives.
For anyone considering visiting Tibet, my advice is simple: Go with an open mind. Do not expect only mountains and monasteries. Tibet is full of surprises - modern cities beside ancient temples, strong traditions beside advanced infrastructure, and some of the warmest people you will ever meet.
And if you ever get the chance to watch the sunset over Mount Everest from the Tibet side, take it. Because some moments stay with you forever. This was one of them.
