Relaxing Train Ride to Lhasa and a Warm Tibetan Welcome

Tibet TrainLeisure time on the Qinghai-Tibet train.

The train journey was super relaxing and took us through the beautiful Tibetan highlands, with some great views of the white mountains of the Himalaya. In between, we had a some food in the on-board restaurant and enjoyed the fantastic view.

A driver from Tibet Vista was already waiting for us at the train station in Lhasa and welcomed us in the Tibetan tradition. A white silk scarf was placed over our shoulders. The driver then drove us to our hotel.

The next morning, 14.06.2024, another driver named Qiangba and an additional guide named Lhak Pa picked us up directly at the hotel, my wife and I, as well as an additional guest, an American. So we were 3 guests and 2 Tibetans, a very small group.

Exploring Tibetan Monasteries, Potala Palace, and the Scenic Journey to Shigatse

Sera MonasteryTibetan monks are dedicated practitioners of Buddhism, known for their deep spiritual devotion, rigorous study, and vibrant cultural traditions.

We went to Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. The Sera Monastery is world-famous for the debating monks and it was interesting to follow the debates. Both monasteries are incredibly beautiful and Lhak Pa explained us a lot with his great knowledge.

Potala PalaceThe stunning night views of Potala Palace illuminate the iconic structure against the backdrop of a starry sky.

On 15.06.24 we visited the imposing Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street. Once again, Lhak Pa explained a lot to us and always knew the answers to all our questions. In the evening, my wife and I walked to Potala Square again and enjoyed the beautiful evening atmosphere with a view of the illuminated Potala Palace.

On the onward journey we drove past the Karola Glacier before arriving in the historic town of Shigatse in the evening.

Karola GlacierOn the road to Shigatse, you'll pass the breathtaking Karola Glacier, a stunning sight that showcases the majestic beauty of the Tibetan landscape.

The next day, 17.06.24, we drove on towards EBC. At the entrance to the nature reserve, we changed to local buses and drove straight to the EBC. A heated tent with separate sleeping cabins awaited us there. We were able to prepare a hot soup with boiling water.

Afterwards, we took countless photos of Mount Everest, which greeted us with a cloudless sky. We also visited the Rongbuk Monastery, where monks and nuns pray and live together. We got up again at night and took more photos of the starful sky and Mount Everest.

On 18.06.24 we unfortunately had to leave the EBC with a last view of Mount Everest. We took the local buses back to our minibus, where our driver Qiangba was already waiting for us. On our journey, we had a magnificent view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Mount Shishapangma. We passed Pelko-Iso Lake before arriving in Gyirong.

On 19.06.2024 we drove to the Tibetan-Nepalese border where Lhak Pa and our driver Qiangba accompanied us safely through the border and brought us to the Nepalese side and our journey to Tibet came to an end.
