8 Days Trip to Everest Base Camp: My Dream Journey to the Roof of the World

Written by Jeroen Slokkers 0 COMMENTS

Visiting Tibet had long been a dream of mine: the vast skies, ancient monasteries, and that iconic view of Everest. In September 2025, I finally made it happen through an eight-day group tour with Tibet Vista. It was my first organized trip, and while I had some doubts about traveling in a group, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Our local Tibetan guide played a huge part in that. She spoke excellent English, was deeply knowledgeable about history and Buddhism, and created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. From practical tips to small jokes on the bus, she kept everyone comfortable and connected. By the end of the week, our group of strangers truly felt like a family.

Planning & Booking

I found Tibet Vista through a colleague who highly recommended them. The booking process was smooth from the start, the communication via WhatsApp was fast, clear, and reassuring. My travel permit arrived at my hotel in Chengdu just a few days later, which immediately built confidence in their organization.

As visiting Tibet requires a pre-arranged tour, traveling with Tibet Vista made everything easy: the itinerary, transport, hotels, and guidance were all arranged. It allowed me to focus entirely on the experience itself, acclimatizing, learning, and simply enjoying every view.

Itinerary Highlights of My Journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa

Flying to Tibet offered breathtaking Himalayan views. A Tibet Vista representative met me at the airport and arranged a comfortable transfer to my hotel. The first afternoon was for rest and gentle acclimatization, surrounded by local restaurants and the buzz of Lhasa life.

Day 2: Drepung & Sera Monasteries

Our first day of sightseeing began with Drepung and Sera Monasteries, both filled with color, chanting, and centuries of history. Despite the drizzle, the atmosphere felt mystical. It was fascinating to learn about Buddhist traditions from our guide and witness the monks’ famous debating practice.

Day 3: Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple

Under bright sunshine, we explored the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple—two of Tibet’s most sacred sites. Watching pilgrims circle the Barkhor with prayer wheels was deeply moving. Afterward, some of us stayed to shop for souvenirs and enjoy a final dinner in Lhasa before the journey west.

Day 4: Lhasa - Gyantse - Shigatse

The road from Lhasa to Shigatse was a highlight itself. We stopped at Yamdrok Lake, shimmering turquoise under high skies, and enjoyed a local farm lunch before visiting the Karola Glacier with its fluttering prayer flags. Each stop revealed another side of Tibet’s stunning landscapes.

Day 5: Shigatse - Tingri - Everest Base Camp

A long but unforgettable drive brought us to Everest Base Camp in Tibet at around 5,000 meters. The scenery grew more dramatic with every turn. Our stay in the group tents was surprisingly comfortable, and that night we shared hotpot after visiting Rongbuk Monastery, the world’s highest monastery.

Day 6: Sunrise at Everest

At dawn, I layered up and joined a few others to watch the sunrise. At first, clouds hid everything—but then Everest appeared, glowing gold in the morning light. It was a rare, breathtaking moment.

We drove back to Shigatse that day, celebrating with dinner and traditional Tibetan dance.

Day 7: Shigatse - Lhasa

On our final travel day, I watched locals doing morning exercises before visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery, home of the Panchen Lama. The golden rooftops and chanting monks offered a peaceful close to our journey.

Back in Lhasa, I spent the evening buying last souvenirs and saying heartfelt goodbyes.

Day 8: Departure

Tibet Vista arranged a 6 a.m. pickup for my flight. The ride through the quiet, waking city was calm and reflective.

As the plane lifted off, I felt thankful for the seamless organization and the unforgettable experiences of the past week.

What Impressed me Most

Here are a few things that really made a difference for me on this trip:

  • Professional guide: Knowledgeable, warm, and attentive to everyone’s needs.
  • Balanced itinerary: Perfect mix of culture and nature, with gradual altitude gain.
  • Organization: Smooth permits, reliable transport, and comfortable hotels.
  • Landscapes: From turquoise lakes to snow-capped peaks and, of course, Everest.

Tips for Future Travelers

  • Arrive a day early to rest and acclimatize.

Even if you feel fine at first, take it slow and allow your body to adjust—altitude sickness in Tibet can appear unexpectedly.

  • Stay hydrated and pace yourself with altitude.

During the trip, water is included and always available in the minivan. Don’t hesitate to drink more than usual (and there are plenty of toilet stops along the way).

  • Pack layers, sunscreen, lip balm, and warm clothes for the evenings.

The Tibet weather can change quickly, so be prepared for both strong UV and occasional rain every day.

  • Most shops accept Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Cash is good to have as a backup, but make sure your Alipay or WeChat Pay works for easy, convenient payments.

  • Respect cultural and photography rules.

Tibet is full of sacred places, always listen to your guide and show respect when visiting these beautiful sites.

  • Group tours make Tibet both accessible and rewarding, especially for solo travelers.

Don’t hesitate to join a Tibet group tour as a solo traveler. I met many fellow solo travelers, and by the end of the trip, it truly felt like we were a family.

Would I Return?

Absolutely. Tibet left a lasting mark on me—the serenity of its monasteries, the kindness of its people, and the vastness of its landscapes. I would love to return one day, perhaps for a festival or a different route, and I wouldn’t hesitate to travel with Tibet Vista again.
