Overview
Merak and Sakteng Trek is a newly-opened route that lies within the protected area of Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in Eastern Bhutan. It allows trekkers to experience a unique semi-nomadic lifestyle and culture in one of the most scenic pastoral valleys in Bhutan.
The trek is a moderate one with an altitude change from 1,500 to 4,100 meters. It begins from Chaling in Trashigang Dzongkhag and ends in Phongmey. You will cross two high passes on the way, pass through semi-nomadic villages of Merak and Sakteng, and perhaps spot endangered animals like snow leopard and read panda if lucky. The people you meet in Merak Sakten area are semi-nomadic yak herders who speak a different dialect, have their own deities and wear a unique style of dress.

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Chaling – Damnongchu (3,316 m)
Distance: 4 km
Time: 3 hours
Camp Altitude: 3,316 m
You will drive to Chaling, from there you will start the trek to Merak. The trail goes with gradual climb to Shaktimi meadow, which is dotted with grazing yaks and sheep. Then climb further to reach Mendula Pass (3354m), from where you will go downhill through rhododendron forest to Damnongchu (3124m).

Day 2: Damnongchu (3,130 m) – Merak (3,499 m)
Distance: 20 km
Time: 4-5 hours
Camp Altitude: 3,499 m
The trail goes along the paved road from Domong Chu to Merak. You will walk through gradual ups and downs until reaching Merak at 3,520 m. The camping site at Merak has a spectacular view of nearby mountains and village. You can visit the local village and meet with the people on the way.

Day 3: Merak (3,499 m) – Miksa Teng (3,079 m)
Distance: 14 km
Time: 6 hours
Ascent: Ascent 633 m, descent 1,074m
Camp Altitude: 3,079 m
Today’s trek from Merak to Miksa Teng is long and of medium difficulty. You will climb to the highest Nachungla pass at 4153m, while trek through juniper and rhododendron forests. From the pass the trail becomes to descend to Miksateng at 3079 m.

Day 4: Miksa Teng (3,079 m) – Sakten (2,950m)
Distance: 14 km
Time: 5 hours
Ascent: Ascent 81 m, descent 310 m
Camp Altitude: 2,950 m
The trek from Miksa Teng to Sakten is an easy one. You will first descend to a river, cross it and follow the river bank for few hours. Then a short climb will bring you to a hill with small Chorten. Descend to the Sakten village for camping.

Day 5: Sakteng Day Halt
Today is your time to explore this mote Himalayan village of Sakten, to experience the lifestyle and unique culture of the ethnic group.
Stay overnight in Sakteng.
Day 6: Sakteng (2,950m) - Jyonkhar Teng (1,859 m)
Distance: 17 km
Time: 6.5 hours
Camp Altitude: 1,859 m
Compared to the trek of previous days, Sakteng to Jyonkhar Teng trek is an easy one. It is mostly downhill to Jyonkhar Teng camp.

Day 7: Jyonkhar Teng (1,859 m) – Phongmay (1,981 m)
Distance: 12 km
Time: 5 hours
It is the final day of this Merak-Sakteng trek. The trail is full of ups and downs till it gets the road that lead to Phongmay. From Phongmay, you will meet your transport and then drive to Tashigang.
