Bhutan Visa & Permit Application for Canadian Tourists

As with travelers from most countries around the world, with the exception of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, Canadian tourists are required to be on a pre-booked tour of the kingdom in order to be able to travel to Bhutan. All tours are booked through tour operators registered with the Tourism Council of Bhutan.

A visa for Bhutan can only be obtained once you have booked a tour, and we will make the application on your behalf using a scanned copy of your passport, once you have paid for the tour. You need to book at least 30 days in advance, so that the visa can be processed with plenty of time for you to make other arrangements. Once approved, we will forward the visa clearance letter to you to allow you to book your flight to Paro, and once there, your visa and other permits will be issued by the immigration desk at the airport.

How to Get to Bhutan from Canada? Multiple Ways to Travel from Canada to Bhutan

Getting to Bhutan from Toronto requires you to first fly to one of the nine airports in five Asian countries that have flights to Bhutan. All flights into the kingdom are provided by the two Bhutanese carriers, Bhutan Airlines and DrukAir. Flights are available from Toronto to Kathmandu in Nepal, via London Heathrow or Istanbul (22 hours); to Singapore via Hong Kong or London Heathrow (20 hours); and to Bangkok in Thailand, via Beijing or Hong Kong (19 hours). Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to any of these airports.

Indirect flights are also available to Dhaka Airport in Bangladesh, which connect via Istanbul and take around 20 hours. Of the five airports in India that offer flights to Bhutan, there are only flights to Kolkata, New Delhi, and Guwahati from Toronto. Flights to Delhi take around 14 hours, and run direct from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Flights to Guwahati and Kolkata are indirect flights, and can take around 23 hours to get to Guwahati and 22 hours for Kolkata.

Bangkok and Delhi are the most obvious choices for flights from Toronto, and the flights from Bangkok take around 3 hours 30 minutes to get to Paro International Airport, while from Delhi, it takes only 2 hours.

Alternatively, you can get a direct flight into China, to either Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, and take a delightful train journey across the Tibetan plateau to Lhasa. From there, you can take the overland tour of Tibet to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and get the flight to Bhutan from there, incorporating tours of China and Tibet in an awesome extended trip.
