Overview

Chele La Trek is a short trek rated as moderate to hard adventure to experience the beautiful landscape of Bhutan. It offers a spectacular view of the Himalayan mountains including Mount Jumolhari, Mount Jichu Drake. Starting from Haa valley, the trek will take you through rich forests and vegetation, meadows, yak herders grazing land and blood pheasants. On the way you will cross two high passes of over 4000 meters. Eventually you will make it to the Chele La Pass where you will be transferred to Paro.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Haa Valley (3,000m) to Sagala (3,890m)

Distance: 5 km
Time: 3 hours
Ascent: Ascent 890 m
Camp Altitude: 3,890 m

The trek begins in the Haa Valley (3,000m). Passing through an unpaved motor road, you will walk on the left side of the villages for less than one hour. The trail then leads to the right side of the villages and will have a gradual climb through yak herders camp till you meet two different trails. You will make your final climb along the right trail to Sagala (3,890m) where you will camp for the night.

Day 2: Sagala (3,890m) – Ningula (4,191m)

Distance: 16 km
Time: 5-7 hours
Ascent: Ascent: 450 m, descent: 860 m
Camp Altitude: 3,330 m

Climb up for half an hour to the Sagala Pass, where you will have an amazing view of Mount Jumolhari (7,314m) and Jitchu Drake (6,989m) if the weather condition allows. From the pass, you will walk on the right side of the trail. After several ascents and descents, through the trails of rhododendrons and meadows, you will reach on the top of the ridge (4,435m). Then descend through forests of hemlock and juniper to reach your camp at 4191m.

Camping at Ningula.

Day 3: Ningula (4,191m) – Chele La (3,988 m); Transfer to Paro

Distance: 13 km
Time: 6-7 hours
Ascent: Ascent 267 m, descent 459 m

Today is the final day for this trek. You will first descend for few minutes and follow the ridge through meadows and yak herders’ camp, and then climb up towards Kung Karpo Sky Burial at an elevation of 4,458m. From there, you will walk up and down while see the panoramic view of Paro valley on the left side and Haa valley on right. You can also see the Kila Gompa nunnery located on the cliffs between Paro and Haa providing a stunning view. Further descend until you reach Chele la pass (3988m), which is one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. The trek ends there and you will be transferred to Paro by car.
