Overview

This 13-day central Bhutan mountain bike tour is one of the most recommended tours for adventurous bikers. You will not only enjoy relaxing cycling experience along the classic trails in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, but also go further to central Bhutan to explore the beautiful Bumthang valleys by bike. Along the way, you will also pay a visit to the noted cultural sites like Paro Rinpung Dzong, Memorial Chorten, Punakha Dzong, Chendebji Chorten, Taktshang Goemba and many more.

This legendary trip starts in Paro, where you will visit its landmarks and enjoy your first biking experience in the flat valley. Then you will travel from Paro to Thimphu to Punakha one by one, and spend time exploring these valleys by bike following popular trails. After that, you will move to Bumthang via Trongsa. The valley of Bumthang is one of the most beautiful and sacred in Bhutan, and will enrich your Bhutan biking tour with more highlighted and unique scenery. After the wonderful biking experiences, the tour will take you back to western Bhutan, passing Wangdue, Phobjikha Valley, to Thimphu and Paro. In the end, you will also not miss the hike to Tiger’s Nest, to get a panoramic view of Paro Valley on the holiest temple of Bhutan.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Paro (2,250 m)

When you arrive in Paro by Bhutan’s national carrier, Druk Air, your tour guide will pick you up at the airport and then escort you to your hotel. After taking a rest, you will head to enjoy sightseeing around Paro.

You will first visit the Ta Dzong Museum, which houses many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. Next drive to the Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples constructed by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. This temple is built in a manner similar to the Jokhang in Lhasa, and holds great golden image of Buddha Shakyamuni inside. And Later explore the Paro Rinpung Dzong. Located at the suburb of Paro City, Rinpung Dzong is a fortress built in the 17th Century to protect Paro valley, which offers you picturesque scenery and a sense of inner peace.

Day 2: Explore Paro Valley by Bike

Today you will enjoy your first day of biking in Paro valley. The valley is rather flat and is suitable for a relaxing biking experience, to adjust to the altitude and warm up the legs. You will bicycle to Drukgyal Dzong, a ruined fortress 16 kms away from Paro town. Although in ruins, this Dzong is of great historical importance. It was here that the Bhutanese finally defeated the invading Tibetans and drove them back.

Day 3: Paro to Thimphu (2,350m)

Then, we will depart to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, following the Pachu River. The drive takes about 1.5 hours in total, during when you can stop on the way to see the Tamchhog Lhakhang, a hereditary place of worship for the Bhutan’s iron bridge builders.

In the afternoon, you will head to visit Memorial Chorten (huge stupa), which was built in the memory of the third King of Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who reigned from 1952-1972. Then visit the National Textile Museum, an amazing museum that keeps the traditional art of waving preserved and exhibits a good collection of ancient colored textile in various forms.

Day 4: Explore Thimphu by Bike (Thimphu - Pangrizampa - Hongtsho Trail)

Today, you will ride to explore the beautiful Thimphu Valley, following the trail of Thimphu – Pangrizampa – Hongtsho. After breakfast, you will be transferred to Thimphu city square, where the riding journey begins. The amazing riding trail runs through the hills of Thimphu, and will take you through places like Pangrizampa, Taba, Sinchula Road Forest, Sinchula Pass, Hongtsho and Simotokha.

After the riding, you will be transferred back to hotel in Thimphu.

Day 5: Thimphu to Punakha (1,250m)

The new day begins with tasty Bhutanese breakfast. After that, we will travel northeast to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan. On the way, we will stop at scenic Dochu La Pass (3,100m) and have a refreshment there. The perfect vintage point brings you the unobstructed vista of Great Himalayas. You will also pay a visit to the Roya Botanical Park, Bhutan’s first botanical park situated at the back of the Dochu La Pass.

Day 6: Explore Punakha by Bike (Khuruthang – Samdiingkha – Punakha Trail)

Today, we will explore the biking trail of Khuruthang – Samdiingkha – Punakha, which follows a 27-km loop route. After breakfast, you will be transferred to Khuruthang to start the mountain biking journey. You will explore the world-renowned Punakha Dzong, widely believed to be the most beautiful Bhutanese Dzong, built at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu Rivers.

Before reaching the Dzong we will cross a suspension foot bridge, which is the longest and highest suspension foot bridge in the country, stretching over 200 above the Pho River. You will also visit Chimi Lhakhang, a popular Buddhist monastery built around 1499 by Ngawang Chogyal.

Day 7: Punakha - Trongsa - Bumthang

Set out in early morning after breakfast and travel to Bumthang through Trongsa. The drive takes you through the oak and pine trees deep into the dense forest and pass the Nobding Village. Get a fantastic panoramic view from the Pele La Pass (3,300 m).

Along the route, distant view of local settlements scattering far from the road gives you fresh and deep impression on Bhutan’s rural life. Meanwhile, the open green meadows with yaks and rhododendron ridden valley are worth ceasing your moving steps to enjoy in Chendebji Chorten (Stupa).

On arrival at Trongsa after lunch, you will take a temporary stop and visit Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong fortress in Bhutan and built on a spur overlooking the gorge of the Mangde River.

Then you continue your travel to Bumthang by passing through Yotong La Pass (3,400 m). The route during this section takes you to the Yathra Waving Center at Zugney village where you can witness the locals waving Yathra, a name that refers to the colorful and woolen cloth with geometric design in Bhutanese. Then the bus takes you further to Bumthang Valley.

Day 8: Explore Bumthang Valley by bike

Today, you will enjoy the biking around the Bumthang Valley, one of the most beautiful and sacred valleys in Bhutan. The fertile valleys of Bumthang are covered in fields of buckwheat, rice and potatoes. Apple orchards and dairy farms are also common sights here. This serene region is one of the most peaceful places in the kingdom. It is possible to bicycle a radius of 60 Kms around the valley.

Day 9: Bumthang – Ura – Bumthang

After breakfast, you will bicycle to Ura valley, 69 km away from Bumthang. Situated at 3100m above sea level, the Ura Valley is the highest among the valleys in Bumthang. It is surrounded by the lush terraced field and lofty hills dotted with alpine trees. Ura valley is known for its scenic view of beautiful meadows and verdant valley.

After that we will drive back to Bumthang.

Day 10: Bumthang to Wangdue via Phobjikha Valley

Travel to Wangdue/Punakha by passing through the Phobjikha valley. The bus will first make a temporary stop at Gangtey Monastery, a can’t-miss monastery of Nyingmapa school of Buddhism, after a dense forest. Then drive towards the Phobjikha valley which is one part of the beautiful Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park.

During the winter, a large flock of black-necked cranes, the endangered species, gather there to escape from the chilly weather. Besides, the forest covered mountains around the valley have been widely accepted as the most remote areas where only the rarely seen nomadic shepherds and yak herders can find the trails.

After lunch you have plenty of time exploring the Phobjikha valley and visiting the Black Necked Crane Center. Then continue your travel to Wangdue Phodrang, the capital of Wangdue Phodrang District.

Dinner will be served at the hotel in Wangdue/Punakha Region.

Day 11: Wangdue to Thimphu

Visit the beautiful Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Lhakhang after hiking to the upper Punakha valley and crossing the hanging bridge through large tracts of paddy fields. It takes you about 1 hour to reach the temple and the view sighted from the temple is also stunning.

Head for Thimphu and visit Simtokha Dzong, one of the oldest dzongs in Bhutan on the route. It now houses the Institute for Language and Culture Studies.

Day 12: Trek to Taksang Lhakhang (Tiger’s Nest)

After breakfast, we will drive to Paro from Thimphu. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a trek to Taktshang Goemba (also known as Tiger's Nest). Standing on the cliff of Paro Valley, Taktshang Goemba (3120 meters) is the landmark of Paro as well as the holiest temple in Bhutan. It’s said that Guru Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche) had flied here on the back of a tigress and meditated in the caves on the cliffside for three months. From here, you can catch a panoramic view of Paro Valley.

After lunch, you may opt for a stone bath or enjoy free exploration nearby.

Day 13: Departure from Paro

Today, our tour guide will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your next destination. Tour service end.
