August,18 2017 BY Master Kungga Dundruk 0 COMMENTS

Xiamen, a beautiful coastal city in China, is known for its eye-catching islands and clean living environments. The long seaside promenade, European style architecture, continental flavour, and sophisticated style add on to the charm of the city and lure in the travellers for a leisure vacation.

Some of the attractions in Xiamen are: Gulangyu Island, South Putuo Temple, Shuzuang Garden, Piano Museum, and the Sunlight Rock. Gulangyu Island is the most popular attraction in Xiamen. It is famous for its historical architectures, relics, and good views. No motor vehicles are allowed in the island. The Sunlight Rock is the highest point in Xiamen; on top you can find a lot of poetry inscriptions that are 400 years old.

If Xiamen is a city of beaches, seaside hip cafes, lush gardens, and leisure resorts, situated on the other side of the country is Tibet, on top of the world, filled with lakes, monasteries, silver mountains, clear blue skies, colourful prayer flags, and yaks.

 Everest Mount Everest in Tibet

Xiamen and Tibet are two contrasting regions, both beautiful in its own way. If land meets sea in Xiamen, water meets heaven in Tibet. Travel to Tibet is often associated with terms such as spiritually enriching, soul cleansing, and calming. For people in Xiamen, Tibet is a perfect contrast that offers a totally different topography than Xiamen. Tibet will be a cold but welcoming change.

There are no direct trains or any other means of transport from Xiamen to Tibet. Any route you take, you will have to transit through another city. There are a few points of transits like Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xian, Zhengzhou, and Wuchang. Here are some suggestions to get from Xiamen to Tibet.

ROUTE 1: XIAMEN-GUANGZHOU-TIBET

1) Xiamen to Guangzhou:

By bus:
Distance: 670 km
Time taken: 10 hrs. approx.
There are frequent buses from Xiamen to Guangzhou from morning till late evening. It costs approximately CNY 230.

By train:

Train no. From To Dep./ Arr. Duration Seater Hard Sleeper Soft Sleeper
K230 Xiamen Guangzhou 17:02 / 05:10 12hrs 8mins CNY 102 CNY 178 CNY 274
K298 Xiamen Guangzhou 18:02 / 06:11 12hrs 9mins CNY 130 CNY 222 CNY 340

The train ticket fares are subject to change depending on various factors like time and month of travel.

2) Guangzhou to Tibet:

Travelling to Tibet by train is one of the most popular means of transport. Thanks to the amazing views the travellers encounter throughout the journey. The railway line to Tibet, the Qinghai-Tibet railway, is the highest railway line in the world. Even though the journey is long and in a very high altitude, the travellers overcome all that just to look at the amazing views.

Train no. From To Dep./ Arr. Distance Duration Seater Hard Sleeper Soft Sleeper
Z264 Guangzhou Lhasa 11:45 / 17:05 4,980km 53hrs 20mins CNY 447 CNY 865 CNY 1468

The ticket fares are subject to change and Guangzhou Lhasa train frequents every day. There are adequate facilities in the train. There is medical help, oxygen tanks (for high altitude problems), canteen, TV, charging points, AC, and adequate washrooms.

The best part about this route is taking the train from Guangzhou to Lhasa. You might feel tired after a half a journey from Xiamen to Guangzhou. It might be hard to go on a long journey right away. So you can rest up in Guangzhou for a day, buy extra food and necessities for the train travel to Tibet. Be mindful of the altitude changes, as they might cause altitude sickness. It is necessary that you get medications from your physician in advance.

ROUTE 2: XIAMEN-CHENGDU-LHASA

1) Xiamen to Chengdu (2,053 km)

By flight:
Travelling by flight is the fastest way to get to Chengdu. There are both layover and non-stop flights to Chengdu every day. The ticket fares start from CNY 2000, they get cheaper or costlier depending on how advance you book, in which portal you book, which month etc.

2) Chengdu to Lhasa

By train:
Like mentioned before, the most romantic, picturesque and adventurous way to get to Tibet is by train.

Train no. From To Dep./ Arr. Distance Duration Seater Hard Sleeper Soft Sleeper

It is best to take a non-stop flight to Chengdu and then travel by train to Tibet. Even though there are flights to Tibet, train is the most scenic way to travel. Another reason why train is preferable to Tibet is the altitude change. When you travel by flight the altitude change is too fast and there is no time to acclimatize and you experience altitude sickness. But, when you go by train the altitude acclimatization is more gradual, you still might get altitude sickness but it will be less severe.

ROUTE 3: Xiamen- Xian-Tibet

The ticket fares are subject to change depending on various factors like time and month of travel. To get to Xian, going by flight is the best way, as the train journey takes a very long time and most of the time the trains are crowded too.

2) Xian-Tibet:

Like discussed in the previous two routes, the best way to get to Tibet is by train. Going in the Qinghai- Tibet railway, the highest railway in the world is a magical experience like no other. Even if the train journey is long, it is pretty comfortable as there all the facilities to make one comfortable.

Train no. From To Dep./ Arr. Distance Duration Seater Hard Sleeper Soft Sleeper
Z265 Xian Lhasa 9:45 / 17:05 2,864km 31hrs 20mins CNY 293.5 CNY 611.5 CNY 969.5

The train ticket fares are subject to change and Xian Lhasa train frequents every day. There are adequate facilities in the train. There is medical help, oxygen tanks (for high altitude problems), canteen, TV, charging points, AC, and adequate washrooms.

The best way to travel in this route is by taking a flight to Xian and then the train to Tibet. The train to Tibet is also a time consuming journey, but it worth every second and every penny spent. Some of the sceneries you will come across are the Qarhan Salt Lake, Jinyintan Prairie, Qinghai Lake, Kunlun Mountains, Tanggula Mountains, and a lot more eye treats. Every part of the journey is picture worthy and the sceneries simply take your breath away.

Make sure you consult your doctor before taking this trip as there will be a lot of altitude change. So most of the travellers are prone to altitude sickness, it is really important to have doctor prescribed medicines. It is better to by small oxygen tanks from stores before setting off travelling in the train to Tibet. They are available on the train, but it never hurts to have some extra.

Even though there is food provided on the train, you can buy some snacks and cup noodles before you start your journey in case you don’t like the menu on the train. The food is also little expensive on the train.

These are some of the suggested ways to get to Tibet from Xiamen. Choosing a flight saves time and choosing a bus or train saves money. You can choose the route you want depending on what you want to save.

Of course, before you either take Tibet train or flights to Lhasa. You have to get your Tibet Travel Permit or Tibet Visa. And our travel consultants can help you sort that out after you book our Tibet tour.
