Two phases of Qinghai-Tibet railway project includes Xining-Golmud and Golmud-Lhasa sections have been completed in 1984 and in 2006 respectively. The construction to three branch lines of the railway encircling Lhasa is expected to be finished before 2020. Three branch lines are Lhasa-Nyingtri, Lhasa-Shigatse and Shigatse-Yadong railways. The construction of Lhasa-Shigatse railway started on September 26th, 2010.
