Shigatse Tashilhunpo Monastery

Tashilhunpo Monastery belongs to Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. In Tibetan, the monastery is called as "bkra-shis lhun-po" which means "Monastery of Luck and Sumeru". Tashilhunpo Monastery, located at the east of Mount Nima, in the west of Shigatse city, is the biggest one in Shigatse prefecture, Tibet.
After the period of 4th Panchen Lama, successive Panchen Lamas took Tashilhunpo Monastery as their traditional seat.
The four major monasteries of Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism are Tashilhunpo, Ganden, Sera and Drepung. Ta'er Lamasery of Qinghai province and Lhabrang Monastery of Gansu province plus the four major monasteries are called the six major monasteries of Gelukpa sect.
